Youngtown police have arrested a man they say sexually assaulted an elderly woman he regularly took to church.
On Jan. 6, a caregiver at Baptist Village in Youngtown found Michael R. Martin, 56, sitting next to the 85-year-old woman.
Both were naked, Youngtown police Lt. Duren Robertson said.
The caregiver, who had been planning to clean the woman's room, called police to the retirement community.
When authorities questioned the 85-year-old woman, who suffers from advanced Alzheimer's and dementia, she could not say what had occurred.
The woman's family and doctor later told police she would not have been able to provide consent for any sexual activity, Robertson said.
Police were forced to wait for test results that might indicate inappropriate contact between the two. After receiving evidence of sexual assault last week, police arrested Martin on Friday at his Phoenix home.
When detectives from Youngtown and the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office questioned Martin, he admitted that he had sex with the woman.
The 56-year-old had been taking the woman to church nearly every Sunday, Robertson said.
