Marion County sheriff's detectives are investigating Monday's death of an adopted 2-year-old girl as a homicide.
They would not discuss just how Faith J. Ray may have been killed, but did say her death appeared to involve child abuse.
A preliminary report indicated Faith, who was rushed to Munroe Regional Medical Center for treatment on Saturday, had bleeding on her brain. She also had "multiple bruises on her arms, chest, legs and thighs, as well as vaginal tearing," according to a deputy's report.
The bleeding was considered life-threatening, and Faith was transferred to Shands at the University of Florida, where she later died.
"There are underlying factors that indicated foul play and the death occurred at the hands of another," said Maj. Chris Blair, head of the Major Crimes Division. "The injuries were consistent with child abuse."
Officials said Faith was one of six children who had been adopted by Violet L. Ray, 34, and Joe A. Ray, 38, both of Belleview. The adoptive father has been a math teacher at Wildwood High School since August 2006.
The Department of Children and Families, which oversees adoptions in the state, is taking a closer look into the couple's adoption files in light of Faith's death, officials said.
Reports said Deputy David McClure arrived at the couple's home at 10694 S.E. 90th Court just after 9 p.m. Friday because of a 911 hang-up. Janette Hamblen, Faith's grandmother, answered the front door. McClure asked if someone had called 911, but Hamblen said not to her knowledge.
McClure asked Hamblen to check the telephone and she told him the phone was off the hook and that one of the children may have dialed 911. The child must have been scared, she said, because a 2-year-old had fallen on the kitchen floor.
Detectives believe the 911 call was placed by a 5-year-old at the home. The boy didn't say anything to the dispatcher.
Inside the home, McClure reported seeing Violet Ray, Faith's adoptive mother, sitting on the floor against the wall. Michael Hamblen, Faith's grandfather, was also sitting on the floor. The little girl was wrapped in a blanket and appeared to be sleeping with her head on her grandfather's shoulder.
The deputy didn't see any injuries on the child's head, according to his report.
They reportedly told McClure she had fallen in the kitchen and bumped her head, but that "everything was OK." He asked how far the girl had fallen and was told it was just from the child's standing height.
McClure asked if they needed medical attention, but the adults all declined the help, saying Faith was breathing and "had fallen asleep," according to the report. McClure said he made the offer again to have an ambulance respond, but again the offer was declined.
He insisted they take the child to the hospital themselves to at least have her looked at, according to his report. They all agreed and said they would take her. Violet Ray stood up and said she would take Faith. Then she went into a back room to get ready to leave, the report says.
But the adults apparently waited until the following morning to call for medical help. Marion County Fire Rescue received a call from the residence at 4:38 a.m. A 2-year-old girl was in cardiac arrest, meaning she wasn't breathing or had no heartbeat.
At 4:45 a.m., Deputy Alan Jones went to the home and met Faith's mother, who told him the girl wasn't breathing. Jones performed CPR until medics arrived, and Faith was taken to Munroe Regional.
At the hospital, Jones was told about the intracranial bleeding and the multiple bruises, according to his report.
Faith died Monday. On Tuesday, following an autopsy, officials with the Medical Examiner's Office contacted the Sheriff's Office to say the death was a homicide.
As of Thursday, the grandmother had custody of the other children, officials said. Among the children, one is Faith's 1-year-old brother. The remaining four are not related to her.
The last of the Rays' adoptions occurred in August, according to DCF officials.
According to a spokesperson for the agency, the Rays were "widely respected adoptive parents in the community."
Carrie Hoeppner, DCF's central regional communications director, said that all couples interested in adoption must go through a "rigorous background screening" of their criminal or abuse history, financial history and personal references, and that nothing out of the ordinary had immediately jumped out from the Rays' file.
"Everything appears OK," she said.
The agency will take a closer look at the adoption files in the days ahead, she added, to see if it might have overlooked any red flags or safety concerns.
Hoeppner said adopting six children "might sound like a lot, but is not uncommon" and that many adoptive households have similar numbers of children.
"The primary concern right now is for the safety of these surviving children. Thankfully, it appears they don't have any obvious or physical injury, although they're going through medical screening," she said.
Since the child's death, the Sheriff's Office has contacted the parents for additional interviews, Blair said.
"The case is going to be reviewed by the State Attorney's Office sometime next week to review the facts of the case and to see what's the next step," he said.
The Violets declined to comment when contacted at their home on Thursday. Reached by telephone, Janette Hamblen said she did not wish to talk.

Sounds to me like the adoptive father did something bad and the adoptive mom and grandma were trying to figure out a reason for what happened to the poor baby to tell the cops. If that is true they should all be strung up.

It may be true that numerous families adopt six or more children, but it is still wrong. There is no way to give six children of differing ages, needs, and backgrounds the level of care they need. I'm dubious that biological families are much better at it. Six children in one home is a group home. Not a family. I don't care how wonderful you are as a parent, you cannot give six children the amount of attention they need and deserve.
Human beings don't give birth to litters for a reason...

I think I agree with you on this. I come from a family of 7children. I for one can say I felt neglected, even unloved some of the time...hell, there was a time when my birthday was overlooked!
I was more of the second mom in the household, not so much a child. Emotionally, yeah, it was hard to get the much needed attention I craved from my mother, not so much my stepfather, he was aloof to most of us much of the time. I decided very early on I would have 2, children, 3 tops.

Baby Faith, what a beautiful name. It is so heartbreaking that your new found home became your place of death. Who hurt you baby girl? I think mom and grandma know exactly what happened....I hope your killer pays with his life.
May the angels comfort you and happiness be your everyday.

OCALA, Fla. - A Central Florida is charged with first-degree murder in the death of one of her six adopted children.
Violet Love Ray of Belleview was being held without bond Wednesday.
Two-year-old Faith Ray died Dec. 8 at a Gainesville hospital. The medical examiner's office ruled the death a homicide.
According to the sheriff's office, Ray gave sheriff's detectives different accounts about the girl's multiple bruises.
Deputies responded to a 911 hang-up from Ray's home Dec. 5. The 35-year-old said another child must have dialed after Faith slipped and fell. Ray called 911 a day later when the girl stopped breathing.
Ray's other children have been in state custody since Faith's death.
Jail records did not show any attorney information.

http://i359.photobucket.com/albums/oo35/Special2bme/Violet_Ray_20090408072513127_320_24.jpgMARION COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Marion County Sheriff's deputies arrested a woman for the death of her child, which occurred in December of last year. After a lengthy investigation and review by a Grand Jury, an indictment was handed down on Tuesday for Violet Ray , 35, of Belleview.
On December 6, 2008, deputies responded to a "suspicious incident" involving a 2-year-old baby. Ray, the mother of the child, stated that one of her other children must have dialed 911 after getting scared when their sibling, Faith Ray, slipped and fell on the kitchen floor.
When deputies arrived on scene, they checked on the child, who was asleep in the arms of an adult. They saw no outward signs of injury, but insisted that she be taken to the hospital to be examined. Ray ensured officers that she would take the child to the hospital and the deputies left. Hours later, Ray reported to a 911 operator that her child was not breathing.
The child was transported to the hospital, where the emergency room doctor reported that the 2 year old had suffered from a brain bleed. The doctor also noted multiple bruising on her arms, chest and legs. The Medical Examiner's Office completed their examination and concluded that the death was a homicide.
Ray has been charged with first degree murder and aggravated child abuse.

A preliminary report indicated Faith, who was rushed to Munroe Regional Medical Center for treatment on Saturday, had bleeding on her brain. She also had "multiple bruises on her arms, chest, legs and thighs, as well as vaginal tearing," according to a deputy's report.
WTH? Also, in the article it stated that the grandparents were at the house too.
http://www.ocala.com/article/20090408/ARTICLES/904089985?Title=DCF-details-tot-s-severe-beating-troubled-mom
The DCF summary cites a medical examiner’s findings that Faith suffered 20 points of blunt-force trauma to the head and 40 points of blunt-force trauma to the torso and extremities.
“While the mother has no diagnosed mental health issue to the knowledge of DCF, the manner in which she beat the child, over taking another child’s toy, was excessive and unreasonable and demonstrative of emotional instability,” the DCF report states.
Faith’s maternal grandmother, Jeanette Hamblin, is cited in the DCF report as being aware that her daughter, Violet Ray, spanked the child. She is quoted as once having told her daughter, “You can’t hit a baby like that.” The report also mentions that Hamblin gave investigators “contradictory statements indicating that Faith was like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.”
It says the Hamblins frequently acted in a caregiver role to the children, yet did nothing to report the alleged abuse of Faith, the second-youngest child.
"It is not reasonable to believe that they did not have knowledge of the physical abuse yet they continued to leave the child in the care of Violet Ray," the report states.
The report concludes Violet Ray was "an inappropriate caregiver to any child."
"Based on her actions, she poses a threat to any child in her care and Joe Ray poses a threat in failing to protect any child in his care,” states the report.
It did not reveal any findings of sexual abuse, although Faith showed signs of vaginal tearing.

I think this story bothers me even more when you give your child a special name then end up killing it. And it wasn't even her child, she had adopted her and that makes it even worse considering the child no dought came out of some bad place.
OCALA - Violet Love Ray, 35, of Belleview, was arrested Tuesday evening on charges of first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse and child neglect in connection with the death of her 2-year-old adopted daughter.
The victim, Faith J. Ray, was one of Ray's six adopted children, according to the Marion County Sheriff's Office.
Faith had been taken to Munroe Regional Medical Center in Ocala on Dec. 6 and flown to Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville. An emergency room doctor told sheriff's investigators Faith had a brain bleed, which was life-threatening, as well as bruising on her arms, chest and legs.
The girl died at Shands on Dec. 8, and the Medical Examiner's Office determined the death was a homicide. Sheriff's Maj. Chris Blair said a county grand jury indicted Ray on March 6, and the indictment was sealed.
On Tuesday, sheriff's detectives Rhonda Stroup and Mark Peavy went to the Marion County Courthouse for a Department of Children and Families hearing involving Ray's parental rights for the other five children. DCF has had custody of them since Faith's death.
At the end of the hearing, the detectives arrested Ray. Stroup said that, once the handcuffs were placed on her, the woman fell to the floor. Detectives immediately called for medical assistance.
Emergency medical officials arrived, checked her vital signs and found her to be in good health; and Ray refused treatment, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Ray was taken to the Marion County Jail, booked in a 7 p.m. and held without bond. As she was led to the jail, Ray, who was wearing a black coat and no shoes, offered no comment and held her head down.

I think Violets parents missed the 'n' out of her name.
20 points of blunt-force trauma to the head and 40 points of blunt-force trauma to the torso and extremities.
Holy shit, 60 points of blunt force tauma to her poor little body, just for taking a frikkin' toy???! What a totally fucked up, evil cunt that bitch is!
I hate to think what she did to the other child who called 911. Poor kid must have seen its sister being battered unmercifully, and tried to get help. How the fuck was she able to adopt so many? Dont the adoption agencies or someone check up on adopted kids to see how they are doing?
And the fucking douche grandparents need to be facing charges too, for turing a blind eye to the abuse of that poor child!
RIP Faith, you should have been adopted by someone who would love and cherish you. I am so sorry this cunt was allowed to adopt you instead.

I just want to express my appreciation to the investigators Ms. Stroup and Mr. Peavy; the DCF attorney, Brenda Summers; the judge, Judge Robbins; and all who truly loved Faith Ray--known for the first two years of her life as Samantha Foster--with particular regards to the foster mom Brittany who loved her as her own, Brittany's family who also loved "Sam" unconditionally, those who took care of her, new her, and made her first two years as joyous and rich as any child could have had.
Please remember that there are many people grieving Faith's [Sam's] loss. While the Ray family and friends gather around Violet and feel pity and sorrow at their own lives for what might become of their loved one (Violet), there are we who sit here and sorrow over what she has taken from us, our lives, our community, and OUR community and country's future. Sam was life. She mattered then, and she matters now.

I saw that comment about her former foster parents and was wondering if it was normal practice to change a child's first name when they are adopted? Wouldn't that be confusing to a child who has already been through so many traumatic experiences? At two years old, I am sure she knew her name...

this just saddens me to no end... that little angel :(
I have a 2 year old so I'm well aware of the frustrations that come along with them, but no way, no how have I ever once thought that getting physical with her was the answer. Even with their temper tantrums and all, they are the most amazing little people, developing personalities and learning about the world.
Now, have I thought about how my life would be easier without her? Yes, I'm not gonna lie.
But I would never in a million years trade her for anything. I would give my life before I let anything happen to her.
RIP Faith, beautiful baby. xoxo
I hope the parents and grandparents suffer everyday of their miserable lives.

FOSTER MOM CALLS FAITH 'A NORMAL BABY'
Brittany Jones, a foster parent who took Faith in on July 12, 2006, when she was 9 days old, disputes those claims.
“They lied about Faith bruising herself. She was a good child,” Jones said Wednesday.
Kid Central Inc. had asked if Jones could take the baby girl as a foster child. Jones said an official later told her Faith had cocaine in her system when she was born. “When I got her, she was fine and acting like a normal baby,” she said.
In January, after Faith’s brother, Micah Ray, was born Dec. 1, 2007, Jones said she was approached by Children's Home Society about adopting him. At the time of his birth, Jones said Micah had several heath issues, including asthma.
Jones said she could not handle both children, so Children's Home Society told her that several married couples would be willing to take the children because they did not want to separate them.
Faith was then turned over to the Rays on March 10, 2008, Jones said. Before the adoption, Jones said she met the Rays on two or three occasions so that they could get acquainted with each other.
Jones said after the adoption she never saw Faith again, because every time she called to set up a time or place they could met, she couldn't get a hold of Ray.
Jones felt horrible about what happened to Faith, she said. "I'm glad they finally charged her."

We are talking about a grandma who really has no real connection to 6 different adopted kids, I dought she was a real grandmother to any of the kids, at best one or 2 of them. Consitering how fucked up her own daughter Violet Ray is.

The only Jekyll/Hyde personality is this monster of a mother. She was so fortunate to be granted the gift of a beautiful child. She repays that blessing by beating the life out of her. There is no doubt in my mind that this woman was adopting children to fill a void, one she could not fill with the love found by children due to the absence of love in her own heart.
With a heavy heart I read the circumstances that surround Samantha/Faith's death and it brings such sorrow to me as I know this child was loved and would have flourished in the home of her original foster home. In these words, I found it summed up Samantha/Faith's life best...
"Sam was life. She mattered then, and she matters now."
Sweetest Samantha Faith. It still holds true that many more will follow the same ending as you found, yet still, others will be fortunate to find the life, and follow that which should have been yours. Kisses sweet one, you were life. The light of life....

As her case heads to trial this fall, Violet Ray was noticeably absent in the courtroom Tuesday during a scheduled status hearing.
That's because, according to court-appointed attorney Tricia Jenkins, the Belleview woman accused of murder is in "a very fragile state" and requested she sit out the hearing.
Although Circuit Judge Jonathan Ohlman granted that request in advance, prosecutors had a different idea in mind for future court events.
"Frankly, I can't envision the case proceeding without her making an appearance in court," said Assistant State Attorney Anthony Tatti, who has taken over the case from veteran prosecutor John Moore, who will be retiring at the end of this month.
The 35-year-old Ray is charged with first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse and child neglect in connection with the beating death of her adopted 2-year-old daughter, Faith Ray, in December 2008. She remains free on bond.
[...]
Prosecutors are seeking a maximum life sentence against Ray.
No plea discussions have taken place at this point, lawyers told the judge.
If no plea agreement is reached, Ray will head to trial in November.
She and her husband had five other adopted children who were all placed into foster care when the Rays' parental rights were terminated in April 2009 following a two-day trial in family court.

Is anyone else in the family being charged at all?
My daughter's name is Samantha (and she's almost 2), and this Samantha died of her injuries on my birthday. I can't properly articulate just how sad and angry I feel because of this case. Everyone who knew what was going on and did nothing should be charged.

Trial date reset for woman accused of murder
A case that has been pending for at least three years will be delayed one last time.
Violet Ray, 37, who is charged with first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse and child neglect in connection with the 2008 death of her 2-year-old adopted daughter, Faith Ray, filed a motion Monday seeking a continuance. Her trial is now set to begin May 14; it had been scheduled to begin March 12.
During a hearing Monday morning, defense attorney Tricia Jenkins argued that one of the defense’s potential experts in the case, a forensic pathologist from St. Petersburg, was incapacitated and did not have adequate time to review the state’s discovery in time for the March trial date.
The defense also alluded to a delay and said it had not retrieved all the discovery from the state.
“It is our position that the loss of our forensic pathologist would be of extreme prejudice to the defense,” Jenkins told Circuit Judge Robert Hodges.
The forensic pathologist’s testimony would be used to dispute the Marion County medical examiner’s report cited in a Department of Children and Families investigative summary, which revealed the child suffered multiple blunt-force trauma to the head, torso and extremities.
Assistant State Attorney Amy Berndt argued that the defense had received all the discovery and did not list the pathologist as a witness in the case.
This posed an issue for the judge to consider the motion to continue.
“I can’t have a continuance based on someone that may or may not be a witness,” Hodges said.
After some consideration, Jenkins revealed the pathologist’s name.
Hodges granted a short-term continuance and set the trial to begin May 14 so the defense’s expert witness would have more time to prepare and also allot time for the state to take his deposition.
Ray, who has been out on bond since April 2009, appeared before the court. In a previous status hearing in March 2010, she requested she not appear in court because she was in a fragile state. On Monday, Ray appeared expressionless and quiet as her attorney argued on her behalf.
She has pleaded not guilty to all of the charges.
Ray and her husband, Joseph, had five other adopted children at the time of Faith’s death, which included the girl’s 1-year-old biological brother. Those children are now in foster care.
The DCF report that concluded Faith’s death was a result of abuse also found that Ray and her husband were unfit caregivers to any child.

Woman gets life for killing toddler daughter
OCALA, Fla. (AP) — A north Florida woman has been sentenced to life in prison for killing her 2-year-old adopted daughter.
A Marion County judge sentenced 38-year-old Violet Ray on Tuesday. She was found guilty by a jury in May of first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse and child neglect.
The Ocala Star-Banner (http://bit.ly/NBc1TM ) reports that Faith Ray died of a lethal head injury in December 2008.
Prosecutors say Violet Ray beat the child and then neglected to call 911.
A defense attorney argued that the head injury was caused by a fall, not by Ray.
