A domestic dispute erupted in the Shelbyville home early Saturday morning and ended with one man firing shots.
It happened near Highpointe Boulevard and Central Park drive.
Police found one woman, Christine Ong, dead and the suspect, 41-year-old Tan Tran, with what appeared to be a self inflicted gun shot wound. Police found them after they rescued other hostages in the home.
Officers received several calls of shots fired in this neighborhood in Shelbyville.
"When they arrived we got another call of shots fired, a stray bullet had entered the house to the east of the suspect's house," Shelbyville Police Lt. Mike Turner said.
As shots rang out one person was able to jump from a second story window, still there were others left inside.
Police evacuated the neighborhood and started negotiations with Tran. Forty minutes went by, but Tran did not respond. That's when officers made the decision to go inside.
"Once inside we found we actually rescued an adult female and a six-year-old boy out of the house," Lt. Turner said.
The woman suffered a gun shot wound to the leg. The six-year-old boy appeared to be unharmed.
Officers searched the home and found Ong dead of a gun shot wound. Upstairs they found Tran with what appeared to be a self inflicted gun shot wound.
Lifeline helicopter took Tran to Methodist Hospital.
Neighbors stood by, comforting each other and relatives who arrived on the scene.
"I'd expect that you'd hear about it in Indianapolis all the time, but never in Shelbyville," neighbor Gary Schofner said. "They got it resolved quick. Luckily nobody else got hurt, it was taken care of really fast."
Tran died Saturday afternoon at Methodist Hospital.
