Officers responded to a fight at a home in the 800 block of Cottage Avenue that had spilled out into the street just after 2 p.m., said Lt. Joe Richardson.
They found a 20-year-old woman who had apparently been beaten over the head with a hammer. She was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital, but police did not release her condition.
Investigators said the victim and a male friend were at the home when they were confronted by the victim's ex-boyfriend, Jeremy Weed, 22, and his friend, Ashley Fields, 25, both of Columbus.
When the victim tried to break up a fight between the men, Fields attacked her with a hammer, Richardson said.
Neighbors helped break up the fight.
"I just came outside and she was in the middle of the street and I looked down the street and saw the other girl took off," said one man, who did not want to be identified.
Weed and Fields left the home before police arrived, but they were later located and arrested.
Weed was preliminarily charged with invasion of privacy and battery and Fields was preliminarily charged with battery.
The victim's name was not released.
