Hawaii -- Big Island detectives report they have charged a Hilo man with first-degree assault stemming from an investigation involving the man’s 4-month old infant boy, who sustained serious head trauma.

Police charged 18-year-old Kainoa C. E. Poepoe-Vigil, of Hilo early Friday afternoon, April 3. He is being held at the Hilo cellblock in lieu of $100,000 bail. His initial court appearance is scheduled for Monday afternoon in South Hilo District Court.

On Wednesday, April 1, fire/rescue personnel took the infant to Hilo Medical Center emergency room. The infant was unresponsive and suffering serious head injuries. He was subsequently transported to The Queens Medical Center on Oahu, where he is listed in critical condition.

The ensuing investigation indicated that the baby’s father was responsible for the injuries. Hilo detectives are looking for any witnesses in this case.

Police specifically want to speak with a man identified only as “Brian,” who may have witnessed this incident, which reportedly occurred in the parking lot of Prince Kuhio Plaza. Detectives are also looking for a man with a Playboy Bunny tattoo on his neck, who is also said to have spent some time with the suspect and the infant.

Geeze , I just posted another story about a different family from the same town. WTF!!!

Police charged an 18-year-old Hilo man with first-degree assault Friday for allegedly causing serious head trauma to his four-month-old son.

Kainoa C.E. Poepoe-Vigil is being held in the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $100,000 bail. His initial appearance is scheduled for Monday afternoon at South Hilo District Court.

According to police Capt. Randall Medeiros, fire rescue personnel took the baby, who was unconscious and unresponsive, to the Hilo Medical Center emergency room at about midday Wednesday. Hospital personnel notified police, Medeiros said, and officers arrested Poepoe-Vigil that afternoon.

Medeiros said subsequent investigation indicated that the father was responsible for the baby's injuries, but he declined to say how the injuries were caused. He did not rule out the possibility that the boy was struck with a blunt instrument.

"We believe the infant sustained the injuries at least a day earlier," Medeiros said.

He said that the incident that caused the boy's trauma reportedly occurred in the Prince Kuhio Plaza parking lot sometime during the day. He said that police received no calls about the incident.

Medeiros said the boy's parents are an unmarried couple, but declined to disclose the mother's name or age, or if they have any other children. He added that the parents decided to take the baby to the hospital when his condition worsened.

"They were taking the infant to the hospital and just happened by chance to run into fire-rescue down by the Hilo Bayfront, so fire-rescue transported the infant to the Hilo Medical Center," he said.
