JEROME, Pa. (AP) — A 73-year-old western Pennsylvania man was charged with killing his 73-year-old wife after authorities said he was upset by her decision to end their marriage of just a few weeks.

Relatives found the body of Ruth Anne Henderson-McTonic on the back porch of her home Friday, police said. She had been shot twice in the chest with a .22-caliber firearm.

William McTonic, of Jerome, is charged with homicide. He was arrested in nearby Somerset after he was pulled over by police Friday and is in the Somerset County Jail.

Conemaugh Township police chief Pete Barclay said the couple had been married for only a few weeks and were living in different residences.

A daughter of the victim told police her mother had begun to end the relationship. Authorities say McTonic became upset, threatened the woman and her family, and also threatened suicide.

Henderson-McTonic's neighbors heard what they believed were gunshots Thursday night, but thought the noises were coming from a nearby target-shooting club, police said.

Police said McTonic told them a gun case on the back seat of his car contained a rifle and a revolver he had been shooting. Police said the case also contained a .22-caliber gun, and authorities later found another gun of the same type and shells in his home.

William McTonic

He looks like a sweet little old man. Appearances can be deceiving.

I wouldn't be surprised if life insurance was involved.

At that age, I wouldn't bother to get married. I certainly wouldn't be leaving my money to some old johnny-come-lately geezer over my kids. And I damn sure wouldn't want to nurse some old fart in his last years. Bah!

CONEMAUGH TWP, PA. — A former Ellwood City woman was killed Thursday night in Somerset County, and her estranged husband is in jail, accused of murder.

The Somerset Daily American and Johnstown Tribune-Democrat reported in their Saturday editions that Ruth Anne Henderson-McTonic, 73, of School Avenue in the village of Jerome, died from two gunshot wounds to her chest.

William McTonic, 73, of Railroad Avenue in Jerome was charged Friday before District Judge Sandra Stevanus of Confluence, according to the Tribune-Democrat. McTonic was placed without bond in Somerset County Jail on a homicide charge.

Henderson lived in Ellwood City until less than a year ago, when she moved to the Johnstown area to be closer to her daughters, said her uncle, Dom Viccari, Ellwood City borough manager.

Bill Henderson, Ruth Henderson’s first husband, was an Ellwood City councilman from 1982 to 1985. He died later that decade, said Viccari, who also was a borough councilman.

According to court documents, as reported by the Daily American, Henderson married McTonic a few weeks ago, but the two separated soon after. Conemaugh Township police said McTonic had threatened Henderson and her family, and talked about committing suicide.

Residents near Henderson’s home on School Avenue reported hearing three shots around 9:30 p.m. Thursday, but they thought the gunfire came from a target-shooting range in the area, the Daily American reported.

Henderson’s body was later discovered by one of her daughters. According to the Daily American, Somerset County Coroner Wallace Miller determined that she died from two .22-caliber gunshots to her torso.

The Tribune-Democrat reported that McTonic was taken into custody just after noon Friday by Somerset borough police, who said they found a .22-caliber handgun in his possession.

After his arrest, police said McTonic gave differing statements about his actions on the night of Henderson’s death and revealed knowledge about her death that wasn’t widely known.

He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing at 11 a.m. Thursday before District Judge Susan Mankamyer of Boswell, according to the Daily American.

Attempts to contact the Conemaugh Township Police Department Sunday afternoon were unsuccessful.

Henderson’s remains will be transported to Ellwood City, Viccari said.

He said she was a longtime employee of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and that she enjoyed cooking and baking.

“She was a friendly person,” he said.

I married The Old Man last year when he was 63. He already knows if he gets to the point he needs day to day care he's going into the VA nursing facility. He's actually looking forward to it, because he thinks he'll be waited on hand and foot by nubile young nurses and CNAs.

Yeah, that's pretty much my take on it too. What a bizarre story.
