A Bartlesville couple reportedly wanted out of Minneapolis, Minn., in connection with the death of a child, are being held on half a million dollars bond each in a local child abuse complaint.
Thomas Ross Gatewood, 37, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of child abuse. Additionally, Brandy Elaine Gatewood, 26, was arrested on a charge of enabling child abuse.
According to police, the Gatewoods are wanted in Minnesota in relation to the death of their child in June 2006. Minneapolis police report that the child had died of Meningitis but had not been taken to the doctor prior to his death. Reportedly, when the medical examiner looked at the child, it was discovered that he had bruises, skull fractures and cracked or fractured ribs at the time of death.
At that time, police made contact with local child welfare workers who said they had recently received a referral on the couple, saying the pair had not been providing medical care for their children — one who is reported to be a few weeks old and the other 19 months. The report further states that the 19-month-old could not walk or talk and was reportedly held by Thomas Gatewood in the delivery room as Brandy gave birth to the most recent child.
When questioned, Brandy Gatewood reportedly said that the two felt that they “do not want to hide anything from their child and they felt it was important that they don’t keep secrets from their child.” Huh?
Child welfare workers then immediately took custody of the children and, after an examination was conducted, found there were “multiple bruises that appeared to differ in the age of the bruise” on the older child. These were described as “looping type bruises” on the back side of the left leg that appeared to wrap around and bruising to the right leg. Police said the bruise on the right appeared to “look like a hand print.” Two more bruises were allegedly found in the small of the back as well as “small red dots on the exterior part of the left and the right eyes.”
When asked about the injuries, Brandy Gatewood reportedly said that the child fell off of the couch a lot. She further said she did not take her child in for medical care because she did not “think the injuries were that bad” and that doctors always “suspect” abuse, reports show.
When questioned, Thomas “admitted to being the person who caused the bruises on the 19-month-old,” according to reports. He reportedly said he did this because “she was playing with papers and tearing them up and messing with the newborn.”
A records check later revealed that Thomas had prior arrests in Kansas for five counts of battery, one count of aggravated battery, aggravated assault and criminal damage to property. He's a keeper.
