A Mineola restaurant owner pleaded not guilty Monday to two counts of second-degree unlawful surveillance after he was arrested and accused of putting a surveillance camera in the women's bathroom, Nassau detectives said.

Omar A. Romero, owner of Poloros Restaurant, at 178 Jericho Tpke., installed the camera after the bar-restaurant had closed Saturday, detectives said.

"It had only been in for one night, so he could only have watched between the time the restaurant opened on Sunday until a little after 7 o'clock when the police arrived," said Det. Lt. Ray Cote, commanding officer of the Nassau Third Squad.

At about 7:20 p.m. Sunday, Cote said, officers responded to a 911 call from the husband of a female customer at Poloros, who said she'd noticed a surveillance camera installed on the ceiling over a bathroom stall.

After officers questioned him, Romero, 34, of 111 S. 31st St. in Wyandanch, showed them the computer on which he watched female patrons and employees in the bathroom, Cote said.

If convicted, Romero, who is married and has three children, faces up to 4 years in prison.

"He admitted that he has a significant behavioral problem and led the officers down to the basement, where they observed that this camera was connected to his PC and his monitor," Cote said. (Ya think?)

Cote showed reporters footage of Romero handling the camera and cables, taken by an internal surveillance camera inside the restaurant. Romero affixed the camera to the ceiling using ordinary cellophane tape. "Obviously he's not very mechanically inclined, and that's how the lady was able to spot [the camera] sticking out of the ceiling tiles," Cote said. (RPFLMAO!)

No recording device was attached to the camera and detectives did not find any footage of the bathroom on his computer.

The Poloros Restaurant was closed Monday. Romero's attorney declined to comment.

In 2004, Romero pleaded guilty in Nassau County Court to sexual misconduct and was sentenced to 6 years probation and fined $1,000. His bail in the recent case was set at $50,000 bond or $25,000 cash and he is due to appear back in court Friday.
