FORT MYERS: An east Fort Myers woman accused of child neglect is under arrest. Neighbors found the woman's two-year-old son all alone, crying in the driveway of his family's home.
Art Joslin explained what got him off his couch Friday night.
He said his roommate, Leland McDaniel, spotted the two-year old boy wandering out into the driveway. He yelled for the toddler's parents, but no one answered.
We asked McDaniel if he was worried about the child and he said, "Yes I was because it was dark and he could have walked anywhere out here and wandered off."
Lee County deputies arrested the boy's 21-year old mother, Clementina Matias. She now faces child neglect charges.
She bonded out of jail, but no one answered the door when we tried to reach her at home Monday afternoon.
Joslin and McDaniel say they saw Matias leave around 9 p.m. Friday night. They say it was at least 30-minutes later when they spotted her son outside of the house and screaming in the driveway.
"I mean a child is a child. I mean, he's an infant, two-years-old. He could have wandered looking for his parents. I was concerned about the baby," said Joslin.
"They just took off and left this baby, and if it hadn't been for the boys that live next door, this street can be pretty rough when it comes to traffic, and that youngster could have been hit," said neighbor Pat Gelakoska.
Right now, the child is still living at the duplex while the Department of Children and Families investigates the charge of inadequate supervision.
An official with DCF says the child is still is still living in the duplex because someone within that home is capable of taking care of him.
