A 26-year-old Staten Island woman was found dead in her apartment today with a hair dryer cord wrapped around her neck, police and law enforcement sources said.

Caroline Wimmer was found face down in her Greenleaf Avenue apartment by her father shortly after noon.

Her family was worried because no one had heard from her since Saturday.

There were no signs of forced entry and nothing appeared to be stolen from her apartment, sources said.

The city medical examiner is slated to conduct an autopsy on Ms. Wimmer tomorrow, according to a spokeswoman.

A police source said it is still not clear whether she was strangled by the cord or whether it was placed around her neck after her death.

Wimmer's MySpace account -- which was logged into sometime on Saturday -- includes a quote that reads, "I will survive whatever life has to throw at me. Nothing or nobody will hold me back."

One neighbor said they heard Wimmer's parents make the grisly discovery.

"The father was trying to wake her up. He was screaming her name," according to a neighbor who asked not to be identified.

The neighbor said she heard Wimmer with several friends early Friday morning.

"I heard her laughing outside. She was with a bunch of guys it was around 2:30 a.m.," she said, adding that Wimmer then drove away in a jeep.

Police now want to talk to the woman's boyfriend, sources said.

Neighbors said she had problems with an ex-boyfriend, who they said broke into her house about six months ago.

It wasn't immediately known if this is the man authorities want to speak with.

When asked if she had any enemies, the father said, "Evidently," adding, "That's what's under investigation."

Cops said Tuesday that an ex-con busted for strangling a Staten Island woman was furious she told his girlfriend he was a cad, and that this wasn't the first woman he choked.

"I didn't do it!" Calvin Lawson yelled to reporters before his arraignment Tuesday.

But law enforcement officials said he did, in fact, squeeze the life out of Caroline Wimmer with a hair dryer cord in her West Brighton flat in March.

Lawson, 28, snapped after he found out Wimmer, 26, and another friend snitched to his girlfriend about his infidelities, police said. Wimmer's body was found by her parents on March 30, a day or two after the killing.

Authorities said Calvin Lawson, 28, has admitted he went to Caroline Wimmer's Staten Island apartment on March 29.

"We got into a scuffle and I choked her," his signed confession read. "I didn't mean for that to happen."

Investigators said Lawson believed that Wimmer, 26, and a friend named Cece had been telling people in their social network that he was cheating on his girlfriend, Kiki, sources said.

Word eventually got back to Kiki and she confronted Lawson, who denied having an affair. Tension then erupted between Wimmer and Cece.

"She said, 'Ma, it's stupid. It's high school,' " said Wimmer's mother, Martha.

In response, Cece began putting nasty postings on Wimmer's MySpace page insinuating that she was having an affair with Lawson. This led him to believe Wimmer was the one behind the rumors, sources said.

So he had a pal, Joshua Perry, a Marine recruit, drive him to Wimmer's apartment where he allegedly killed her. Wimmer's mother found her body on the bathroom floor the next day.

"There was no relationship whatsoever," she said. "They killed my daughter for no reason."

The murder remained unsolved for weeks until detectives got a tip leading them to Perry, 23, whom they picked up on Saturday at the Marine base in Parris Island, SC. Perry then gave up Lawson, sources said.

Cops tracked down Lawson on Monday. When led out of a Staten Island police station, he said: "I didn't do it. I already told them who did it."

The alleged strangulation is not the first time Lawson was accused of assaulting a woman.

In 2006, he was arrested for punching, choking and striking with a metal hammer his live-in girlfriend and the mother of two of his other children.

He was never convicted - and the case is sealed - but the woman authorities said he attacked was flabbergasted at his arrest Tuesday.

"Oh, my God! Oh, my God! No!" said Erika Melendez, who Lawson allegedly beat and threatened to kill. "I am so in shock now."

My heart goes out to her parents, I can not imagine finding one of my children murdered..... Prayers going up for them to receive some kind of Peace and that they and Caroline receive justice!!
