BRYSON CITY – Investigators believe the Swain County jailer suspected of letting a murder suspect out of his cell and fleeing with him in her father's truck had help pulling off the operation.
Authorities nationwide are on the lookout for detention officer Anita Kaye Vestal, 32, and Jeffery Czechonna Miles, who was in jail awaiting trial on first-degree murder in a double homicide. They have been entered into the FBI's National Criminal Information Center, which broadcasts their descriptions to police across the country.
Sheriff Curtis Cochran said there's no evidence that Vestal or her family was threatened or offered money before the escape. The sheriff said he believes Miles gained the jailer's trust and persuaded her to help him.
Vestal had been on the job since October and has a husband and four children. She has no criminal record and has passed her state jailer's certification.
“He's thrown star dust in her eyes,” he said Monday. “Mrs. Vestal's life is very much in danger. We're assuming that Miles is armed at this point. The best thing she could do is get away from him and call the nearest law enforcement.”
The sheriff said his office has had tips but uncovered no new leads on the whereabouts of the pair.
Vestal let Miles out of his cell about 3 p.m. Saturday, the sheriff said. He declined to discuss more details. She's been charged with aiding Miles' escape.
They left her minivan in the parking lot of her home at Bryson Creek Apartments, about 10 minutes away from the jail, and took her father's 2001 Ford Ranger pickup truck with a maroon camper top and a North Carolina license plate.
Cochran said he believes the two have left the area and abandoned the truck. But he is still asking the public to be on the lookout for the truck and the fugitives.
Miles, 27, is black, about 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs 180-190 pounds. Vestal is Cherokee, about 5 feet 3 inches tall and weighs 275 pounds, the sheriff said.
Sheriff's deputies wearing body armor and carrying assault rifles set up roadblocks and surrounded Vestal's apartment Saturday afternoon. A N.C. Highway Patrol helicopter was dispatched 40 minutes after the escape.
Neighbors said deputies were banging on Vestal's doors and windows as her husband arrived home Saturday. A man outside the home Monday said he was a relative and declined to comment.
Robert Ogden, who lives upstairs from the Vestals, said the couple would always wave hello and didn't seem to have any problems.
But the night before the escape, he noticed something unusual.
“She was texting (on her mobile phone) for an hour or two, sitting in her vehicle,” he said. “It was late. Probably 1 o'clock. We just thought it was kind of odd that she would go from where it was warm inside to out in her vehicle and text. It was kind of chilly that night.”
Miles is one of six people charged with killing James David Scott Wiggins, 33, and Michael Heath Compton, 34. The men were shot to death in their home in August.
The murders mark one of the most brutal crimes in recent memory in rural Swain County, where people still leave their doors unlocked at night.
Wiggins is the son of a former sheriff. His family declined comment on Monday.
Vestal is the niece of Larry Blythe, the vice chief of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
Her family, through the tribe's public affairs office, urged her to call home on Monday.
“We remain deeply concerned about Anita,” the family said. “We would ask her to contact us, without endangering herself, to let us know she is safe. If anyone has seen Anita or has any information, please contact law enforcement officials immediately. We would ask the community to continue to remember our family in prayer during this time of difficulty.”
