Rosa Mari Martinez, 50, and her granddaughter were caught by Sears’ store security after the two attempted to leave with over $196 in merchandise, said Salem Police.
According to police, Martinez and her grandchild went through several store areas picking up items before trying to leave the store. The items they had attempted to steal included a DVD, toothbrush holder and a TV stand.
“Retail crime is a rapidly growing problem, especially as challenging economic times increase the market for stolen merchandise,” said Joseph LaRocca, vice president for loss prevention at the National Retail Federation.
Martinez is being charged with shoplifting and endangering the welfare of a child. She is being held at Rockingham County Jail pending arraignment. Her grandchild was released to the custody of relatives pending juvenile petition.http://www.thebostonchannel.com/news/18994069/detail.html
