Law Says Mom Used Son, 14, As Designated Driver
A Johnston County woman faces child abuse charges after she allegedly used her 14-year-old as a designated driver.

Thirty-nine year-old Angel Gale Montayne of Massengill Pond Road in Angier was charged with two counts of child abuse and impaired supervision of a child after she was pulled by Johnston sheriff's deputies at a SAFE Team checkpoint Thursday afternoon.

During the checkpoint, WTSB radio reported, deputies said they noticed a car turn down a dirt path to avoid officers. When they stopped the car they found a 14-year-old boy behind the wheel, a 14-year-old girl in the back seat and Ms. Montayne in the passenger seat.

One of the teens was Ms. Montayne's child, the other was her stepchild.

Ms. Montayne was released on a $5,000 bond pending her court appearance.

SAFE Team supervisor and Johnston Sheriff's Lt. Jeff Caldwell said rarely do such charges stem from a license checkpoint.

"This just goes to prove how vital checking stations are throughout the county," he said.

I bet she thought she was doing the right thing by not driving while drunk, lol.

My mom started letting me drive at 13 and I was running errands all over town for her by the time I was 14... I'm not saying it was right, just thought I would share.

It is legal to drive at 14 in Iowa, I think it still is anyway. I was out driving friends cars at 14, don't really believe it was safe, but I was. Farm kids do it all the time.

I guess I just don't see him driving as a huge deal. If the kids was out joy riding with friends what would he and the friends be charged with? And I doubt the kid was telling mom he didn't want to drive. No, you should not use your 14 yr old as a DD, but again worst case this should be more of a driving without a license kind of thing.

If the mom is poop faced drunk, there is no real adult supervison going on in the car. And some one in the car realised they were breaking the law if they tried to avoid the check point.

Its hard to tell how many hours the kid had under his belt, and how good of a driver he is. If he was driving that makes him responsible for 3 peoples lifes. I dought he had much training from a responsible driver and no class time from school. I wouldnt want to be on the road with him.

Glad she wasn't driving! I also don't think if she asked her kid to drive that he had a shot at saying no to that mug! Sheeeit!

14 year olds in Iowa can have a learner's permit, 15 year olds can get school permits, and then they cang et a full license at 16... or at least that's how it was for me in the 90s.
