TERRYTOWN, La. – A 2-year-old girl is dead after she was struck by a vehicle Saturday night in Terrytown.

The incident happened in the 700 block of Heritage Avenue around 9 p.m.

According to Sheriff Newell Normand, a family friend was driving 2-year-old Tajanae Cheatham in an SUV. After pulling into a driveway and parking, the girl’s mother unbuckled her daughter from her child seat and then went to get her purse.

At that point the girl got out of the SUV. While the driver tried to re-position the car in the driveway, the driver hit the girl.

The girl died early Sunday morning at the hospital.

Normand said there will be no charges filed at this time, but the Jefferson Parish District Attorney’s Office will be consulted.

Another one? God, these accidents are so sad, and entirely preventable!

If the mother was going to get her purse (from the house I presume?) then why didnt she take the child with her, as she had already unbuckled her seatbelt?

If she was just quickly running in to get it, why unbuckle the seat in the first place?

And how did the driver not notice the little girl getting out? She would have to open the door to get out, so you would think the driver would notice that. And if the mother had left the door open then surely the driver would have got out to close it before moving the vehicle?

Poor little girl. My heart goes out to her, and to the family for their loss. But they were terribly careless here.

R.I.P little Tajanae. x

I used to read on kidsincars.org, but the stories posted by grieving parents was just too much. It did make me far more aware of car safety.

Rest in peace little Tajanae.
