Detective: Man Killed Wife In Front Of Their Child
COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- A judge has ordered a Kennesaw man held in jail without bond after a detective testified the man murdered his wife in front of their 11-year-old daughter.
Police said some of their witnesses will be 911 dispatchers who heard the horrific drama unfold on the phone.
Investigators said Robert Caldwell emptied his revolver during a night of violence on March 6. Detectives testified Friday that Sylvia Caldwell had locked herself in the bedroom with the couple’s 11-year-old daughter. The 62-year-old retired military veteran shot his way into the room as his 50-year-old wife called 911, the detective said.
"Mr. Caldwell apparently gains access to the master bedroom, Mrs. Caldwell is heard stating, 'Don't shoot me, don't shoot me.' Mr. Caldwell says something to the effect of, 'You asked for this.' And then there is the noise that I interpret as being at least one gunshot," Det. Bill Macauley with the Cobb County Police Department testified.
Sylvia Caldwell had been shot in the head.
911 operators could only helplessly listen on the line to the screaming of the 11-year-old girl until police arrived.
Police found Robert Caldwell on the front porch.
"At one point, they noted in their reports, that the accused said something to the effect of, 'I've shot my wife, she's upstairs.' They went upstairs after clearing the house, where they located Mrs. Sylvia Caldwell in the master bedroom," said Macauley.
Caldwell quit talking to police after that.
Some of Sylvia Caldwell’s family listened to the testimony in court. One family friend told Channel 2 Action News reporter Ross Cavitt they simply hoped the case would be an eye-opener about domestic violence.
