Two men were fishing at Lake Artemesia in Berwyn Heights Sunday when they made the horrible discovery-- a dead newborn girl in a plastic bag floating near the shoreline.

Police are not sure how old the girl was. They described her as an infant.

It isn't clear how the baby died. There were no obvious signs of trauma to her tiny body, police said.

The park was packed with joggers, walkers and people on bikes who were enjoying a beautiful Sunday afternoon. Some were asked to leave and others turned away as police closed the park during this suspicious death investigation.

Police want to remind parents that in Maryland Safe Haven Law, which states a mother can leave her child in the care of an adult at any police station, hospital or fire department within 72 hours of birth with no questions asked.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit at (301) 772-4925 or Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477).

Certainly sounds like a newborn...
One of the fisherman told FOX 5 that he hooked the bag with the baby girl inside, and upon opening it they discovered the umbilical cord was still attached.

Needa, I hear you, adding a baby girl would finish our family perfectly....though we would likely adopt. I would have taken you in a heartbeat sweet one.

Whoever dumped you so heartlessly should know, they threw away the most exquisite treasure to behold.

I'll remember you Mary Rose.

This is so incredibly sad. How is it that this mother felt her only option was to place this baby in a plastic bag and throw it into the lake?

Seriously.. If "I" were going to do what she did... and I didn't want the baby found, I'd either bury it, or if I were stupid enough or desperate enough to dump her into the lake, I'd place a brick or something inside the bag......

Why are killers so stupid?

And why are so many babies just thrown out like garbage, when there are sooooo many families who are desperate for a child?

Baby Mary Rose laid to rest.

CLINTON, Md. - Two months after the body of a baby girl was found dumped in a Prince George's County lake, she was officially buried Friday at a memorial service in Clinton, Maryland.

Investigators say they haven't given up on finding the child's mother, and they hope Friday's service brings closure and opens a new door to solving the case. At the memorial service, a small, white casket was adorned with pink roses. The baby girl was surrounded by people who had become her family.

"If no one stands up for this baby, if we don't do it, no one will do it," said Det. Steve Campbell of the Prince George's County Police Department.

Investigators believe the baby could have been in the lake since January. With no leads on the mother, or on who could have done it, Campbell refused to let the case become just a number—so he named the baby Mary Rose Dareca.

"St. Derecka was St. Patrick's sister, so on that particular day—March 22—she was the only female saint," Det. Campbell explained.
