Longtime New York radio newsman George Weber was found stabbed to death in his Brooklyn apartment Sunday morning, cops said.

Weber, who spent a decade doing the news on WABC morning radio before being laid off last year, was found just after 9 a.m.

"I used to hear his voice in the top and the bottom of the hour. It's a voice New Yorkers know. Now that voice has been silenced," said Aaron Katersky, 33, an ABC colleague who found himself covering a friend's murder.

Weber, 47, didn't show up for work Saturday or Sunday, so his bosses called the cops.

Police believe he died Friday evening.

He was found in his bed with several stab wounds in his neck and upper torso, cops said.

There was no sign of forced entry to his first-floor brownstone apartment on Henry St. in Carroll Gardens.

The front door was locked, but a back door was unlocked. The apartment had been ransacked, though it was not clear what, if anything, was taken.

The murder weapon was not recovered.

Weber would have celebrated his 48th birthday Monday.

Curtis Sliwa, who did a 5 a.m. "pre-show" with Weber for eight years at WABC before the regular "Curtis & Kuby" morning show, called his death "a tremendous loss."

"News ran through his veins and arteries 24 hours a day," Sliwa said.

"He wasn't a rip-and-read newsman. He wanted to be there," he said. "And you know what his trick was? He'd pack up his dog, Noodles, a dachshund, and walk him there. People would see the dog, they'd pet the dog, they'd get a level of comfort with him. And then he could get them to talk."

Noodles died a few years ago.

Calling himself "the news guy," Weber maintained a lively blog. His last entry, a rant about his battles with bedbugs, was posted Friday.

He made his daily visit to his regular bar, the Blarney Rock on W, 33rd St., as usual on Friday afternoon.

"He seemed fine," said the waitress who saw him.

Patrons and staff at the bar, where Weber was such a fixture that his picture hangs on the wall, were stunned to hear of his murder.

"He was like family here," said weekend manager James Donovan. "George Web, dead? I can't believe it. He was one of the sweetest guys I've ever met."

Waitress Andrea Tierney was baffled. "He didn't have any enemies. None at all," she said. "Who could want to kill him?"

ABC News Radio General Manager Steve Jones called Weber "a consummate journalist" and said the network was "shocked and deeply saddened by the death."

"An investigation has been launched by NYPD and we have been assisting them," he said. "Our condolences and prayers go out to George's family and friends at this very difficult time."

Weber, a Pennyslvania native, worked his way up in the radio business, paying his dues at KIMN, KOA and KTLK in Denver, KMPC and KABC in Los Angeles, KGO in San Francisco and KOGO in San Diego.

He was laid off from WABC in February 2008 along with veteran John Gambling and had been working as a freelance news anchor at ABC News Radio.

At WABC, Weber covered the 2001 falling of the Twin Towers from the scene.

"He worked all over the country, but when he got to Brooklyn, he adopted it. He knew more about Brooklyn than the natives," Sliwa said.

"I'd go to parties at his house and he'd have all kinds of people there - artists, longshoremen, media people, everybody. You'd hang around for hours and never run out of people to meet. Everybody loved George because he really listened to them." continued

A teenager was arrested Tuesday night after he confessed to the grisly murder of a radio newsman in his New York City apartment, according to the New York Post.

The 16-year-old from the borough of Queens was taken into custody in upstate New York and charged with the slaying of ABC News radio broadcaster George Weber, who was stabbed as many as 50 times in his Brooklyn apartment, the Post reported.

The teen, who was not immediately identified, confessed to the gruesome killing early Wednesday morning.

A source told the Post that the 47-year-old Weber and the teen had been e-mailing each other.

Investigators told the paper that the knife sliced through Weber's neck, back and torso so many times that it was difficult to get an accurate count by the time the body was discovered two days ago.

Weber's ankles were duct-taped and wounds on his hands suggested he tried to fight off his attacker, sources told the Post.

Detectives poked through neighborhood trash and peered into sewers yesterday in search of the murder weapon.

Weber's ankles were duct-taped and wounds on his hands suggested he tried to fight off his attacker, the sources said.

The newsman's family released a statement yesterday remembering him as "a truly caring person who loved and was loved by all he met."

NEW YORK - A teenager with a Web site describing him as a sadomasochist and featuring photos of a knife collection was arrested Wednesday in the stabbing death of a veteran New York City radio reporter he met on the Internet.

Police officials said that John Katehis, 16, confessed to killing George Weber shortly after being taken into custody late Tuesday in Middletown, N.Y., where he was hiding out at a friend's home.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said at a news conference Wednesday that the meeting between the suspect and Weber, 47, involved “an exchange of money.”

A law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity because charges were still being drawn up, later said the suspect claimed Weber had offered him $60 to have rough sex.

Police found Weber's bound body Sunday in the bedroom of this Brooklyn apartment after his boss reported him missing. He had been stabbed at least 50 times and bound at the ankles with duct tape.

A name for the Queens teenager's attorney was not immediately available.

On a MySpace page, Katehis has posted a series of photos with various knives, one with the caption, “Love this blade.” He describes himself as “a very easy person to talk to,” but also as “an Extremist, an Anarchist and a Sadomasochist.”

He cautions, “As long as you show respect for me i will show respect for you, if you disrespect me, then i will ... break your neck.”

Weber had his first contact with Katehis on Craigslist sometime last week before the pair arranged a meeting, Kelly said.

A witness told investigators he spotted Katehis on a cell phone outside Weber's apartment around 6 p.m. Friday, about the time police believe the suspect was let inside. Police believe that once there, he stabbed Weber in the neck, chest and back; the victim also had stab wounds on his hands, indicating he tried to fight back.

The teen fled after exchanging his bloodstained clothing for some of the victim's clothes, police said. A transit worker later spotted him on a subway train bleeding from his left hand and notified police.

Police said Katehis claimed the wound was caused by a bottle; he was treated at a hospital and released. Following tips, investigators later located him in Middletown, where he was captured outside a bus station.

The suspect was carrying a dagger, police added, though it was not believed to be the murder weapon.

In a statement on Wednesday, the network's general manager, Steve Jones, thanked police, adding, “Our thoughts continue to be with George's family.”

The kid's "story":John Katehis was trolling through the "gigs" section on Craigslist, looking for a way to make a little extra money when he came upon an ad with the provocative heading, "Smother Me."

The teen had tried raising cash in other ways, including selling his Sidekick communications gadget online, but apparently was willing to try something more dangerous.

He responded, saying he was "Interested. I'm a 16-year-old white male willing to smother," according to a written statement. Later that night, the author of the ad, New York City newsman George Weber, wrote back, asking for pictures and saying he'd pay $60 for the sexual play.

But the liaison did not go as planned. Weber was found stabbed to death in his bedroom, and Katehis pleaded not guilty Friday to a second-degree murder charge. A signed statement released Friday says Katehis acted in self defense. He is being held without bail.

His attorney Jeffrey Schwartz described Katehis as a scared, exploited teenager plied with drugs and booze.

"He was 16. He is not old enough to give consent, and he was acting in self-defense of a sexual assault," Schwartz said.

But Prosecutors portray Katehis as a willing participant and killer. They say Katehis stabbed Weber at least 50 times, then used the shower and replaced his bloody clothes with some from Weber's closet.

His father Spiro told police, according to a New York Police Department report, that his son usually carried two knives.

Katehis' MySpace page showed a youth with a "diablo" tattoo posing with a variety of knives. The page, taken down shortly after the stabbing, said Katehis liked "drinking, bike riding, hanging out ... I am an extremist, an anarchist and a sadomasochist. As long as you show respect for me, I will show respect for you."

The murder weapon never was recovered, police said.

After the initial exchange, according to the four-page statement signed by the Queens teenager, the two exchanged more messages and photos and agreed Katehis would come to Weber's Brooklyn brownstone on March 20.

Katehis arrived to Weber's leafy Carroll Gardens neighborhood and stopped for M&Ms and root beer. Inside, Weber offered him a Bud Light, then lines of cocaine, Katehis' first time with the drug, according to the report.

He started to feel jumpy. Then Weber said, "Let me show you what's going on in the other room."

In the bedroom: Duct tape, mirrors and rope. Weber asked to be tied up and Katehis bound his legs, according to the statement.

Things started moving fast.

Weber flipped over and showed him a knife with a 3-inch blade, and Katehis got nervous. They struggled for the blade. Katehis sliced his finger and then accidentally stabbed Weber in the neck, according to the statement. "I don't remember stabbing him any other times," he said in the statement.

After that, his memory was hazy. He swigged whiskey, rummaged through the apartment not sure what he was looking for, took the $60 from Weber's pants pocket and fled while Weber was still alive, dumping the knife near a tree, the statement says.

The teen arranged to meet his dad for money and clothing two days after the incident in upstate Middletown, where police arrested him, the report says.
