New York City police said a Queens man with a history of mental problems has been arrested in the vicious slaying of a psychologist attacked in her office with a meat cleaver.

David Tarloff, 39, was taken into custody Saturday after investigators matched him with three palm prints found at the bloody crime scene, police said.

Police questioned Tarloff for about 20 minutes. The interrogation stopped when he asked for a lawyer, police said.

The mentally ill man who killed a psychiatrist with a meat cleaver in an Upper East Side office in 2008 is expected to use the insanity defense when his trial begins on Tuesday.

Long-time psychiatric patient David Tarloff, 42, was charged with the murder of Kathryn Faughey, who shared an East 79th Street office with another psychiatrist who had treated him previously. Tarloff admitted to killing Faughey and said he was carrying out God's wishes on the day of the crime.

"Everything about his thought process was so bizarre — so crazy — that the proof in the case shows he was legally insane at the time of the commission of the offenses," Konoski said.

The 2008 attack was aimed at psychiatrist Kent Shinbach, who shared an office with Faughey and had once had Tarloff committed to an inpatient mental facility. Shinbach was also attacked with a meat cleaver by Tarloff on the day Faughey was killed, but he escaped with his life.

Tarloff reportedly told authorities the attack was part of a plan to get his mother out of a nursing home. He told police he planned to rob Shinbach to finance his attempt to spring his mother.

Tarloff was previously deemed unfit to stand trial, but the decision was reversed within the past year.

At first, it seemed the madman had reached into a jacket pocket and pulled out a piece of plastic.

But by the time Dr. Kent Shinbach realized it was a meat cleaver, the crazy man was "slicing away at me," according to never-before released details from the heroic shrink's grand-jury testimony.

"I'm going to kill you!" the crazed fiend, David Tarloff, kept repeating as the cleaver came down again and again.

On Feb. 12, 2008, Tarloff walked into the suite of offices Shinbach and Faughey shared on East 76th Street at York Avenue, according to Tarloff's statements to authorities.

He was wheeling a suitcase holding extra clothing, and adult diapers, for his mother, Beatrice -- a failing woman who Tarloff says he still called "Mommy," and who he admits he continued to share a bed with in their Queens apartment until she was committed to nursing care.

Tarloff's admitted aim was to overpower and rob Shinbach -- the psychiatrist responsible for Tarloff's first-ever forced psychiatric committal almost 20 years prior.

Shinbach was "evil," Tarloff has complained. Using Shinbach's ATM card and PIN number, he'd withdraw $40,000, and take his mother to Hawaii -- a plan he has said repeatedly was sanctioned by God.

At the sound of Faughey's screams, Shinbach rushed to her door. Inside, Faughey was on the floor, drenched in blood from cleaver blows to the chest and neck. Shinbach asked the stricken woman, "Are you alright?" he recalled to cops.

From behind him came Tarloff's voice: "She is dead."

As the two began wrestling, Tarloff pulled out the cleaver, its handle broken off in the violent assault on Faughey. According to Shinbach's account, Tarloff slashed at his face and body repeatedly.

"How do you like that?" Tarloff asked, putting the cleaver blade into his victim's mouth. As Shinbach lay bleeding, Tarloff rifled through his wallet, demanded his PIN number, quibbled over the number of digits, and then ran out. But before leaving the office suite, Tarloff had this to say to Shinbach's last patient: "Dr. Shinbach should be killed."

The woman told cops she gave the blood-splattered madman a kick to his groin before he fled.http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/manhattan/doc_relives_cleaver_slay_wE7ENiwGuer7E0ppqAr1nN

This sumbitch is a cross between Manson and Bates with his I love my mommy persona and Manson stare. Some people have no right to be living in society.

However it is a story I love to read so close to Hallows eve.

A schizophrenic accused of murdering a psychotherapist with a meat cleaver was ruled mentally unfit Tuesday for trial, indefinitely delaying a trial that came close to starting but has long been rocked by uncertainty about his mental state.

The decision means David Tarloff will be sent to a state hospital for treatment until doctors find he has improved enough to stand trial - if they ever do. He has varied between findings of fitness and incompetence since his 2008 arrest in Kathryn Faughey's death in her Manhattan office.

The ruling came after two psychiatrists found Tarloff incompetent for trial, and a prosecutor said he refused to cooperate with a third exam, leaving that doctor unable to reach a conclusion about his fitness and prosecutors unable to challenge it.

Being competent for trial means being able to understand court proceedings and help in one's defense. It doesn't rule out an insanity defense, which requires showing that a person was so mentally ill when committing a crime that he or she didn't know it was wrong.

Jury selection was nearly finished last month when Tarloff refused to leave a courthouse holding cell or respond to questions, his lawyers said. After being taken back to Bellevue Hospital, he stripped naked and ran around a psychiatric ward, according to his lawyer.

As for the future, "I think it's possible that he'll be found fit enough to return to court" at some point, Konoski said. "But I'm not sure he'll ever be fit enough to withstand the stresses of a full murder trial."

Faughey's relatives said Tuesday's developments wouldn't diminish their determination to see the case through; some of her siblings have attended every one of Tarloff's court appearances.

"We've been through this a few times," brother Owen Faughey said.http://www.lakewyliepilot.com/2010/11/09/915213/psychiatric-finding-due-in-nyc.html

Cleaver-wielding schizophrenic David Tarloff is mentally fit to stand trial in the slashing slay of an Upper East Side psychiatrist --but just barely, and his current address on Rikers Island is making him worse, defense lawyers said today.

With a murder trial still five months off, the defense, prosecutors and the judge agreed that Tarloff must be moved as soon as possible from the general population at Rikers to a psychiatric lockup at Bellevue Hospital.

Tarloff has been at Rikers since June, when state shrinks deemed him fit for a third time to stand trial for the February 2008 murder of beloved Dr. Kathryn Faughey in her East 79th St. offices.

Twice before, in 2010 and in 2011, he had also been deemed mentally fit for trial. But in preparation for trial he was both times moved by health officials from a state psychiatric facility to Rikers, where he quickly relapsed and was found unfit again, scuttling both trials on the brink of jury selection.

"He is still experiencing hallucinations of an audio and visual type," defense lawyer Frederick Sosinsky told Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Edward McLaughlin today.

"Your honor, since I was 20 years old, I want the District Attorney to know, I've been hallucinating … God and the devil," Tarloff interrupted from the defense table.

"Now that he is in Rikers, there is a steady, slow, decompensation," added defense lawyer Bryan Konosky.

Oh, no, he doesn't need an X carved in his forehead. This guy is channeling his inner Marty Feldman (is that the guy's name? The one who played "Igor" in the "Young Frankenstein" movie?).

Anywhoooo.... as I was saying, he is channeling his inner Marty Feldman. And doing a fine job of it, too, I might add.

Oh another note, b/c I live on tangents, it's how my mind works, I am wondering to what degree and how would one be feeling as he approached another living person with a meat cleaver? I'd like to think that, at some point, it would register in MY mind somewhere in there just how horrible the act is/will be and my mind would simply shut everything down. OK, so maybe it wouldn't really happen that way, but I really would like to think it would.

Meat cleavers. *Shudder* I need to go back to my vampire movies.
