The first-degree murder arrest warrant of Russell D. Long sheds some new light on the death of his two-month old daughter. Johnson City Police arrested Long Friday for the murder of his infant daughter Kaylie Adkins. Investigators say they found the girl dead on a couch inside a home on Edna Court earlier this month.

Police say a preliminary autopsy report showed the child died from a head injury sustained while she was in the care of her father. In addition, Long’s arrest warrant reveals the father told police the little girl rolled off a couch on February 27th while he was babysitting her. According to the warrant, after that incident, the baby began throwing up and refusing to eat for the following week leading up to her death.http://www.tricities.com/tri/news/local/article/arrest_warrant_reveals_new_information_in_death_of _infant/21809/

A 2-month-old Johnson City girl's brain hemorrhaged from blunt force trauma, according to a preliminary autopsy report cited in a court document charging the infant's father with murder.

Russell D. Long, 24, 206 Edna Court, No. 75, was arraigned by General Sessions Judge James Nidiffer by video Monday afternoon on one count of firstdegree murder in the March 6 death of Kaylie Adkins.

Johnson City police said Long gave several stories about what could have caused his daughter's injuries before telling investigators that she rolled off the couch about a week before her death. Police arrested Long on Friday, apparently after getting the preliminary autopsy report from forensic pathologist Dr. Teresa Campbell and after he gave a statement about the girl rolling off the couch.

According to JCPD Investigator Joe Harrah's affidavit of complaint, Campbell told police the autopsy revealed that the baby had skull fractures on the back of her head and four to seven fractured ribs that were healing.

The affidavit also indicated that Campbell's preliminary report showed the child had "bilateral subdural hemorrhages," or blood collecting on the surface of the brain, and bilateral optic nerve hemorrhages.

During the investigation, police learned that for several weeks prior to her death, Long had been keeping his daughter while her mother was at work.

"Mr. Long ... stated that no other person had kept Kaylie other than himself. He also gave different versions of what may have caused the injuries to his daughter."

In Harrah's affidavit, he said Long told investigators that his daughter rolled off the couch Feb. 27, but that he did not tell anyone about it and he did not seek medical attention - even after she began to throw up and refused to eat in the days leading up to her death.

During the video arraignment Monday, Long asked Nidiffer about getting the charge reduced to "negligence," but Nidiffer told him he should speak to his attorney. Nidiffer set the case for Thursday when Long will appear with a court-appointed attorney.

In Nidiffer's consideration for a bond for Long, Assistant District Attorney Julie Hayes told him that Long has had criminal activity in Chicago. Nidiffer set Long's bond at $1 million.

Now, how is it that the mother didn't notice babies strange behavior? she certainly wouldn't be a calm, happy baby. All this injuries would cause a lot of pain and the not eating is a huge warning bell that something is wrong. Curious if she even asked a damn thing. Had he said the baby rolled off the couch, I'd say bullshit, babies don't roll at 2 months old...dumb fuck.

I know the bastard husband caused the injuries and for that he deserves death to allow his daughter to suffer so after assaulting her with injuries....still, the mother should have noticed something wrong...something. I notice the slightest differences in my children, fussier than normal, sleeping more, eating less....I can't imagine not noticing my baby crying in pain every time I tried to change her diaper or clothes. Had these injuries been discovered sooner, might have Kaylie lived? I don't know, but as a mother, I would never forgive myself for not noticing something was wrong....seem incredulous to me. I would have let my grief out on this bastard who was left to care for his daughter and instead beat her and killed her. Yes, I'd see it fit and just.

So sorry little Kaylie...kisses sweet one.

Jessica Adkins the Bio-mom was arrested today and charged with "First Degree Murder" in the death of her 2-month-old infant daughter " Kaylie Trinity ".

A Johnson City, Tennessee, judge set bond at $100,000 for Jessica Adkins, 20, the mother of a deceased 2-month-old infant girl. Adkins will return to court on April 16th at 1:00 p.m., according to a court clerk. Adkins was arraigned through a video connection between the judge’s chambers and the Washington County Detention Center in Jonesborough, Tennessee.

Johnson City Police have made another arrest in the death of a two-month-old girl.

Officers arrested 20-year-old Jessica Adkins Friday and charged her with First Degree Murder in the death of her daughter. Police say Adkins gave investigators false statements claiming she sought medical attention for the little girl, but after further investigation, officers discovered that Adkins didn’t seek any medical attention for her daughter.

Johnson City Police arrested Russell Long last month, and they say his negligence may have led to his daughter’s death.
According to an arrest warrant, Long told police his daughter rolled off a couch a week before she died, and that he didn’t tell the baby’s mother and did not seek medical treatment for his daughter.

Police say a preliminary autopsy reveals that the little girl died due to an injury to the head. However, at the time of her death, she also had bleeding in the brain, skull fractures, and several broken ribs.

Jessica Adkins is being held without bond tonight, and will appear in court Monday.

The grand jury indicted both Long and Adkins on the charge of felony murder with child neglect. However, Assistant District Attorney Dennis Brooks says jurors will have the option of convicting long for first degree murder in connection to child abuse.

The trial of two people charged in connection with the death of a two-month-old baby continued on Wednesday.

Jessica Adkins, the mother of the child, had been out of jail on bond. But after arriving 40 minutes late, Judge Robert Cupp revoked her bond. He gave her 10 days in jail for contempt and put her in leg shackles. "You don't have respect for this court," said Cupp.

Kaylie Adkins died March 6, 2009; she was just 87 days old. The state contends the baby was abused and neglected. They say an autopsy found three skull fractures and four broken ribs.
[...]

Jessica Adkins and Russell Long both told police they thought their baby girl had a stomach virus. They say they took her to the doctor, but the state says the doctor will testify that appointment was for the couple's older daughter.

"He did not examine that child that day," said Assistant District Attorney Dennis Brooks.

Detectives say Russell Long, who's been in jail since his arrest, had several different versions of how Kaylie's skull could have been fractured. Police say he told them he dropped her in the bath tub, that she hit her head on the side of the tub and that she rolled off the couch.

But Long's attorney says he had no idea the baby was hurt. "He said, 'I just though she was sick, I didn't know, I didn't know,'" attorney Jeff Kelly described to the jury.
[...]

Both parents face felony murder by aggravated child neglect because prosecutors say they did not seek medical care. If convicted, they could get life in prison.

Life for both of them.

It took a nine-woman, three-man jury panel three hours to decide that Russell Long and Jessica Adkins were responsible for their infant daughter’s death because they failed to provide medical care after Long inflicted injuries on the child.

Long, 26, was convicted of two counts of first degree felony murder — one involving child abuse and one involving child neglect — while Adkins, 23, was convicted of felony murder by child neglect.

Both were sentenced to life in prison after the jury returned its verdict around 6:15 p.m. Monday
[...]

In closing arguments, Assistant District Attorney Erin McArdle presented a dramatic display of how many bottles of formula Kaylie should have eaten — about 30 in five days — compared to how man she actually consumed — six bottles of two ounces or less and three bottles of a couple ounces each of Pedialyte.
[...]

When police interviewed Adkins, she continued to insist that she thought Kaylie just had a stomach virus and it had to run its course. She denied any knowledge that her daughter had been dropped or rolled off the couch.

At one point when police were questioning the two, they allowed Adkins into the same room as Long.

Jurors watched the video showing the couple talking and Long saying he didn’t tell Adkins because he didn’t want her to think he was a bad father.
[...]

Once the verdict was read, Adkins put her face in her hands and cried. Long sat with no expression. When Cupp told them to stand and sentenced them to life, Adkins appeared to nearly collapse and leaned on her other attorney, Donna Bolton.
