MUNCIE -- A Dunkirk woman has been accused of taking out her unhappiness with a former boyfriend on the rural Muncie man's puppy.
Alissa Amber Riddle, 20, 8608 W. Jay County Road 300-S, was charged this week with cruelty to an animal, a Class A misdemeanor carrying a maximum one-year jail term.
Authorities allege Riddle forced her way into the man's home, in the 6000 block of North Delaware County Road 500-E, after kicking a rear door in about noon March 5.
Delaware County sheriff's deputies were en route to a report of a domestic problem at that address when they were advised Riddle "had just killed (the man's) puppy."
The ex-boyfriend told police Riddle "picked up the puppy and threw the puppy onto a hard-wood table," according to court documents.
Deputies said the injured dog -- described as a very small, apparently recently born Lab -- was alive when they arrived. The owner told police he intended to take the dog to a veterinarian's office.
Riddle was arrested and taken to the Delaware County jail, where she was released later that day after posting a $16,000 bond.
She is also charged with residential entry and possession of a controlled substance, both Class D felonies carrying maximum three-year sentences. The drug charge stems from the alleged discovery of Vicodin tablets in Riddle's purse.
An initial hearing on all three charges is set March 23 in Delaware Circuit Court 4. Efforts to contact the pet owner for an update on the dog's condition were not successful.
