Dan Andrews
An Ava man accused of fatally stabbing his wife and infant son now faces murder charges.
The Douglas County prosecutor filed two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of armed criminal action against Dan Allen Andrews this afternoon, online court records show.
Andrews’ wife, Mary Burchell, and 8-month-old son Taylor Andrews were found stabbed to death at the family’s home early this morning.
A probable cause statement filed with the charges said a pocket knife and large, double-edged sword were recovered from the scene, both with blood on them.
Deputies found Burchell with significant wounds to her face and stab wounds on her body, the document says. Authorities found the infant in his crib, with two stab wounds to the chest.
Though family members had earlier said the child’s name was Tyler, court documents call him Taylor.
The probable cause document also says Andrews confessed to the murders, telling deputies “I killed her,” then “and I killed my son, too.”
Though authorities have released little about the incident, family members described Dan Andrews as having a history of mental illness.
The man’s father, Starlin Andrews, told a reporter his son had threatened his family’s life in the past. He said Dan Andrews had been evaluated by mental health professionals in West Plains last month and was released despite his family’s protestations.
Also at the scene was Landon Fleetwood, Dan Andrews’ step-father and the family’s landlord.
Fleetwood said Dan Andrews often made swords, and believed one of the weapons was used in the killings.
Douglas County Sheriff Chris Degase say authorities got a 911 call from the Ava home about 1:30 a.m. Monday.
Degase said when he arrived at the scene, Dan Andrews was outside the home but tried to run. The man was arrested and has refused to talk to authorities, he said.

Sweet Jesus! How awful. I wonder why the wife didn't take the baby and get the hell out of Dodge? First threat would have been enough for me.

Even against family wishes he was released. I hope someone goes down for this, someone needs to pay for this gross irresponsible release of this mad man.
AVA, Mo. -- The father of a man accused of killing his wife and infant son says his son should have been in a mental health institution. He said he and others warned doctors that his son would harm someone if he wasn't supervised.
Dan Andrews, 30, is charged for the murders of his wife, Mary, and infant son, Tyler, west of Ava early Monday. Douglas County sheriff's deputies say he used a sword. A witness who was staying with the family ran from the home and called the sheriff's department about the murders around 1 a.m.
.....
The victims were Mary Andrews, 24, and Tyler Andrews, 8 months. Andrews is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of armed criminal action.
Starlin Andrews of Jefferson City, the father of Dan Andrews, says he's furious about the death of his daughter-in-law and only grandchild. He says his son has displayed symptoms of schizophrenia since suffering a head injury in a car accident. Andrews said his son is delusional and has visions of people and beings chasing him.
Just last month, Andrews said, his son was treated at a mental health facility in West Plains and released after a few days over his family's objections. He said doctors said they couldn't keep him unless there was imminent danger that he was going to harm himself or others. Andrews says his son also was treated and released at a mental health facility in Jefferson City.
Investigators did autopsies on the bodies of Mary and Tyler Andrews in Springfield on Monday morning. The sheriff attended the autopsies
He killed his wife and baby with a sword....I can't wrap my mind around this one...it's just so horrific and dark, unbelievable. How could he? Out of your fucking mind, he must be. Perfectly family, beautiful baby boy....no more. Gone.:dong:
Rest in peace mama and baby.

A guy we've been friends with for years. Oddly enough, metal illness also runs in his family. One of his brothers is schizophrenic. I wonder if he has a touch of it because sometimes he'll say things that make no sense.

Dan Andrews talked about aliens from outer space and voices in his head, family members said. He claimed his infant son was the second coming of Christ and he was the anti-Christ.
Starlin Andrews said his son voluntarily committed himself to the Mid Missouri Mental Health Center in Jefferson City two years ago.
The stay was only temporary. Last month, relatives checked him into a West Plains hospital for evaluation after finding Taylor nearly dead from hypothermia after being left in his father's care. On Feb. 21, the child was found wearing only a diaper in bitterly cold temperatures, Starlin Andrews said.

I just can't understand that woman staying with psycho, knowing he was crazy and had almost killed her son. WTF was she thinking?
One site I read mentioned she might've been pregnant at the time of the killings.

Yet another failure of our mental health system. Do these idiots realize that most mentally ill people don't realize they're mentally ill?!

No kidding Ucat. I would have run, putting yourself in harms way is one thing but keeping the baby around this guy isn't something I would do. O am in no way trying to disrespect the dead here but it's clear he had/has some pretty major and serious issues.
