Tustin, CAL -- The mother was arrested and held on suspicion of felony child endangerment, resisting arrest and possession of a Taser gun.

A mother was wrestled to the ground by a sheriff's deputy Saturday after allegedly crushing her crying 9-month-old baby under her body, officials said.

Amber Castillo, 30, was behind bars Sunday and her baby was uninjured after Saturday's incident, the Orange County Sheriff's Department said.

Castillo was allegedly high on drugs at the time of the incident.

Sheriff's Lt. Ted Boyne told the Orange County Registrar that Castillo's roommate called police Saturday at 8:45 a.m. and told them that she thought the mother was armed with a shotgun and sitting with her baby.

Authorities had reportedly received prior calls regarding drug use at the home in the 1800 block of Theodora Drive in Tustin.

When deputies approached the house Saturday, they saw Castillo sitting in front of the baby, who was lying on a recliner, and asked her to come out, Boyne said.

According to officials, Castillo told the deputies to come in and then raised her shirt, appearing to reach for a weapon. Castillo began to run as Deputy Scott Steinle drew his gun. He holstered it and chased her, the Register reported.

The mother then ran to the recliner, jumped on it and allegedly crushed her baby, Boyne said.

"She slammed her weight down and squeezed the baby hard," Boyne told the Register. "The baby is crying the entire time." Castillo was removed from the baby by Deputy Steinle. "He basically saved the child's life," Boyne said.

Castillo was arrested and held on suspicion of felony child endangerment, resisting arrest and possession of a Taser gun, the Register reported.

Child Protective Services took her baby, who did not seem to be hurt, into custody, Boyne told the Register.

A mother – believed to be on drugs – was arrested today after she attacked her own 9-month-old daughter, authorities said. A sheriff's deputy, Scott Steinle, has been credited with saving the child.

Amber Castillo, 30, is being held on several charges, including felony child endangerment, resisting arrest and possession of a taser gun, said Lt. Ted Boyne of the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

Sheriff's deputies went to Castillo's home in the 1800 block of Theodora Drive, which is in unincorporated Tustin, around 8:47 a.m., Boyne said. Castillo's roommate – who was not at home – had called police, alerting them that she believed Castillo was armed with a shotgun and sitting with her child.

The residence is known to authorities as a "meth house" because of previous calls about drug use, Boyne said.

When deputies walked up to the house, they saw that the baby was lying on a recliner and that Castillo was sitting in front of her, Boyne said.

Deputies told Castillo to come out, but instead she urged them to come in, Boyne said. As Deputy Scott Steinle opened the door, Castillo raised her shirt and appeared to be reaching for a weapon.

Steinle drew his gun and entered the house, Boyne said. Castillo took off running toward the back of the house. Steinle put his weapon in his holster, and chased her, Boyne said.

She then ran towards the recliner, jumped on it, and assaulted her baby, Boyne said. "She slammed her weight down and squeezed the baby hard," he said. "The baby is crying the entire time."

Steinle managed to wrestle Castillo off her child, Boyne said. "He basically saved the child's life," Boyne said.

Steinle asked Castillo if she had any weapons and she admitted to having one in her bra. He found a hidden stun gun on Castillo.

Castillo is believed to have been under the influence of drugs at the time of this incident. Her baby girl, who did not appear to be physically hurt, was taken into custody by Child Protective Services, Boyne said.

Castillo had pleaded guilty to DUI and resisting a police officer in 2006. She was convicted of battery charges in 2002, Orange County Superior Court records show.
