Sea Hag sez:
Walter Matthau is perfect as the world-weary and sarcastic New York police detective. Capable of interjecting quick wit into the most morbid situations and equally capable of committing numerous faux pas, he nonetheless never loses his humanity and does not let fear of ridicule deter him from taking care of the business at hand.
Robert Shaw is evil, and we know it from the get go. He conveys this to the audience without shooting anyone, kicking a dog, or beating a woman. And to top it off Martin Balsam is his right hand man.
To go on would be depriving people of the experience that this film rightfully deserves when first watching it.
Last I heardTony Scott was remaking this and using it as a star vehicle for Denzel Washington. I'm not against this for I think a modern interpretation could prove to be a kick ass film. (like richet's assault on precinct 13)
But ask yourself this, is that film going to have a cast of fallen screen legends like Walter Mathau, Robert Shaw & Martin Balsam?
I think not.
