Editor's note: An earlier version of this story reported that the SUV was idling; it was not.
FORT WORTH — A 2-year-old boy died Monday afternoon after an SUV rolled over him outside a south Fort Worth home while his mother was inside using the bathroom, police said.
Julian Tarin’s mother and aunt had apparently left him and three other children inside a Chevrolet Blazer in the 7100 block of Ashbourne Way, said Lt. Pedro Criado, a Fort Worth police spokesman. The other children told police that, while the adults were gone. Tarin climbed into the driver’s seat and shifted gears
"It was reported that when the vehicle started moving, the child was startled and got out," before the SUV rolled over him, Criado said.
The adults told police that they had taken the keys to the vehicles inside with them, he said. The boy had reportedly been in the back seat and wearing a seat belt but had not been in a child safety seat.
The other children were a 1-year-old in a child safety seat and a 9-year-old, he said. The fourth child’s age was not known. Investigators were still interviewing family members, he said.
Neighbor Demetra Prince said she was watching television Monday when she heard her neighbor wailing.
"I ran outside and saw her holding her child, screaming for mercy," Prince said. "She was crying for help."
Prince said her nephew was once attacked by some stray dogs in the neighborhood and initially thought the boy had been attacked too.
"Then I saw the vehicle in the street," she said.
A man inside the home called 911 but was so distraught that Prince said she took the phone and got instructions to resuscitate the boy. She said she did not know if she was ever able to revive him.
Children’s bicycles sat outside the house where the child died Monday. Teenagers returning home from school with backpacks on stopped to watch police investigate.
"I just hate that it happened," Prince said. "It was so heartbreaking."

I'm very tired right now and want to comment and will when less tired. But may the boy RIP and I'm so sorry his life ended too soon.
