A Morristown man is facing charges in connection with the weekend death of an 8-month-old girl. According to Morristown Police, 23-year-old Luis Martinez Alvarez is the child's uncle.
Investigators said Alvarez and his wife were watching the baby Friday while the child's parents were working.
Police told 10News, the aunt left to go to the store, leaving Alvarez alone with the child.
That's when, according to police, Alvarez took the child to the hospital in Morristown. The child was transferred to East Tennessee Children's Hospital, where she died Sunday.
Investigators said Alvarez was arrested Saturday after ETCH staff alerted police of a child abuse case. Police said the girl had been deprived of oxygen for some time.
Alvarez is charged with aggravated child abuse and aggravated child neglect or endangerment. Investigators are working with the District Attorney General's office to determine whether any additional charges will be filed.

MORRISTOWN — Morristown police are investigating the death of an 8-month-old girl who died Sunday at a Knoxville hospital.
Morristown Police Department Det. Travis Stansell said authorities were alerted Friday evening that the infant had been brought to a hospital with severe injuries.
The baby first was treated at Morristown-Hamblen Hospital and then was transferred to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital in Knoxville.
Stansell said an investigation led early Saturday morning to charges filed against the girl’s uncle, Luis Martinez Alvarez, 23. Stansell said Alvarez initially was charged with aggravated child abuse and neglect.
Stansell said since the baby died, the probe will be reviewed by the District Attorney General’s office to upgrade the charges. Alvarez remained this morning in jail. No bond has been set on his charges..
