ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Police said Beverly Chacon hit and killed Brenda Melton while driving intoxicated last Wednesday. The woman Chacon hit, Melton, was a close friend, who raised Chacon's children while she served time in jail.

Chacon has a long history with the law, including misdemeanors, felonies and prior DWIs.

Melton was an active volunteer in different organizations around her community, one of them being Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

"She was a very kindhearted person," said Floyd Salas, Melton's brother in law.

The family has known Chacon for years and is devastated by her behavior.

"She tried to get her bond lowered. That's the part that angered us all," said Salas.

Chacon appeared in court Sunday. She faces charges including vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident. She is being held on a $500,000 bond.

Brenda Melton's family is asking that any donations be made to the Humane Society, Brenda's favorite charity.

Aside from abusing kids in any way, drunk driving is one of the top things that piss me off. I'm on the road at all hours when my kids are gone for the weekends and I make damn certain I haven't been drinking before I get in my car, why can't others do the same? My kids are out riding or walking during the day and these people are out driving drunk, my grandmother is out driving places she needs to go and these people are out. And then, they are sorry, they are sorry they hurt someone or sorry they killed someone. They go to jail for such short periods of time and are out on the streets to do it all over again. Bull shit.... tougher laws.... you kill someone drunk driving, that is murder in my book, you knew this could happen and you drove anyway

What a shame, we need more people like Brenda Melton and fewer like Chacon. What a sad day it is when somebody who spends so much of their life helping others gets mowed down by one of the people their charitable nature benefited.

As for Chacon trying to get her bail lowered, that was just plain selfish.
