SOUTH BRUNSWICK — A District Heights, Md., woman was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and eluding police after she tried to run over a police officer with a car, said Detective Sgt. James J. Stoddard.
Police were dispatched to Acme Nissan on Route 130 at 9:30 p.m. Thursday in response to a reported customer dispute, Stoddard said.
When patrolman Michael Urstadt arrived, Maria Rojas, 39, who was sitting inside a 2008 Nissan Altima, accelerated the vehicle toward the manager, Richard Braude, who was standing in front of the car, Stoddard said.
The officer activated his overhead lights and positioned his vehicle in front of the Altima, the officer said. As he exited, he signaled the driver to stop and park the vehicle, Stoddard said. In response, Rojas aimed her vehicle in the direction of the officer and punched the accelerator in an attempt to run him over, he said.
The officer dodged the oncoming vehicle, which sped out of the lot onto Route 130 northbound, Stoddard said.
A second officer, patrolman Roger Touhy, who was responding to the scene, intercepted the vehicle at the BP gas station at the corner of Route 130 and Davidsons Mill Road. Rojas fought with officers as they tried to place her under arrest, but no injuries were reported, he said.
Rojas, who was reportedly at the car dealership to locate a boyfriend who is employed there, got into the dispute after the manager asked her to leave the premises, Stoddard said.
Rojas was released on $5,000 bail.
