Daniel Murray, 21, of 118 Cortland Ave., has been charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

Police said Murray stabbed Richard A. Ballenger, 52, of 316 Hillsboro Parkway, with a kitchen knife. Police recovered the knife they believe was used.

Ballenger, a vice principal at Huntington School in the Syracuse City School District, suffered multiple stab wounds to his torso and neck and was taken to University Hospital around 4:30 a.m, police said.

A University Hospital nursing supervisor said she had no information about Ballenger, but police Lt. Joseph Cecile said Ballenger underwent surgery and was listed in critical condition Sunday.

Police said Murray and Ballenger were acquaintances. They met at Trexx Dance Club on North Clinton Street, and Ballenger invited Murray back to his home. The suspect fled the home after the stabbing, police said, but was located by police a block away.

Syracuse School Superintendent Daniel G. Lowengard said counselors will be available to school staff and students who need help in coping.
