MEMPHIS, TN - Investigators said on February 27, 2009, eleven-month old Brennan Rayford was taken to Lebonheur Children's Medical Center. The baby was unresponsive when police arrived at the hospital, and was suffering from an unexplained head injury.

Rayford remained in the intensive care unit for several days before dying Sunday.

"The child died as a result of blunt force trauma," said MPD Sgt. Lambert Ross.

Investigators later determined the baby was left in the care of Jamaal Eddie, 26, the mother’s boyfriend, when she went to work Friday morning.

News of Brennan Rayford's death is upsetting for several neighbors, including Lareco Williams. "Some women always think their boyfriend is the best thing in the world and they don't find out the truth until the end."

According to court records, Jamaal Eddie was arrested in October, 2007, for domestic assault. Investigators say he beat his ex-girlfriend, causing swelling and injuries to her face. The next month, an order of protection was filed against him.

Neighbors like Andrea Dixon-Johnson are outraged. Johnson advises all parents to put their children first. "Maybe he (Jamaal Eddie) just needs to be in jail for the rest of his life. Jamaal Eddie told police he took 11 month-old Brennan Rayford to the hospital when he noticed the baby was unconscious.

He says he knew why; he admitted to hitting the child "in the head several times with his open hand because he would not stop crying."

Just last Thursday Brennan made mom proud by taking his first two steps. The very next day, police say her boyfriend beat the child to death while he was taking care of the child while mom went to work.

Eddie may not have been a man to trust because he's currently on diversion for domestic assault.

I've always been curious about that idea myself. I mean seriously the only way you could actually stop a child from crying via abuse would be to knock them out, give them brain damage or to kill them. None of those ideas seem like good ones. WTF happened to putting the baby down and walking away to cool off?

Found Guilty!

27-year old Jamaal Eddie was found guilty of First Degree Murder in perpetration of Aggravated Child Abuse, Aggravated Child Abuse and Aggravated Child Neglect or Endangerment for the death of Brennan Rayford in February 2009.



Eddie received an automatic life sentence for the murder charge. He is scheduled to be sentenced on the additional charges March 25.
