HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - A Huntington man is in custody this morning after allegedly shooting at a Huntington police officer trying to foil a robbery.
Officer Ryan Bentley, a nine-year veteran of the Huntington Police Department, was recovering from bullet wounds to his leg and shoulder this morning, while 20-year-old Anthony "A Train" Jennings, of Huntington, was being questioned about Bentley's shooting, according to the Huntington Herald Dispatch newspaper and WSAZ-TV.
Huntington Police Chief Skip Holbrook was not immediately available for comment. According to media reports, Bentley was shot after coming upon an armed robbery near Doulton Avenue and 17th Street in Huntington at about 1:15 a.m.
Holbrook told the Herald Dispatch that Bentley chased Jennings into a nearby alley, but that Jennings turned and allegedly opened fire on the officer. Holbrook told the newspaper that Bentley was able to provide details to fellow officers, who formed a manhunt and tracked Jennings down at a house on Eighth Avenue about four hours later.
Holbrook said Bentley was in serious but stable condition. His injuries were not expected to be life-threatening.
