Phillip Leslie was arrested at the bus garage after finishing his route, said Indianapolis Sgt. Paul Thompson.
He was arrested on five charges, two of them felonies, including operating a vehicle while intoxicated, neglect of a dependent and child endangerment.
After they were dropped off the bus, students told their parents that Leslie had been driving erratically and on the wrong side of the road.
Police were not sure where the driver was on his route, so they attempted to contact Leslie over the school system's radios, but he didn't respond, according to a police report.
Officers said they found Leslie's bus in the 8500 block of East Indian Creek Road, just before it pulled into the bus garage.
Police said that Leslie initially refused to open the bus door and then appeared to not know which button to push to open the door.
Once officers got into the bus, they said there was a strong smell of alcohol at the front of the bus.
Officers said Leslie's speech was slurred and he wasn't able to stand up straight. He subsequently failed field sobriety tests and was arrested.
Leslie had picked up children from Kitley Intermediate School. According to one of the students who was on board, he stopped at some houses a second time after he had already dropped students off at those homes. Two students reported that Leslie struck at least one mailbox.
Franklin Township schools sent an automated phone message to the parents of students who ride Leslie's bus.
"As you can image, we are outraged by this incident," said Ron Blackgrave, assistant superintendent for operations in part of that call. "We will be cooperating with the police department in this incident."
Franklin Township schools hired Leslie in 2008. School officials said they plan to terminate his employment.

Unfucking believable is all I can say. What the hell was he thinking. Asshole!
