The children, belonging to Kevondra Marion, are young — one is 1-year and another is about 4 months, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

FDLE spokesman, assistant special agent in charge Francisco Hidalgo, said the Fort Myers Police officer, whose name has not yet been released, did not know the children were in the vehicle, driven by Marion, when the officer fired.

DCF spokeswoman Erin Gillespie said there was no prior reports involving anyone by Marion’s name, and as of this afternoon, no case had been opened regarding them.

Marion has been arrested on a charge of aggravated battery on a police officer, and was taken to Lee County Jail.

The U.S. Marshal’s Service Regional Task Force had been looking for Marion’s boyfriend, Arthur Coleman, 33, who had an active warrant out for his arrest for violation of probation for trafficking in stolen property. He had also led Fort Myers police on a chase late last week and on another occasion in December.

In both cases, officers ended the vehicle pursuits when it became too dangerous.

Deputy Rick Jessup with the U.S. Marshal’s Service said the operation early this morning on Gibson Street was solely to arrest Coleman. Hidalgo said that while questioning Marion’s mother, Mary Marion, at 112 Gibson Avenue, Kevondra Marion fled in one car, while Coleman fled in another, a stolen white Acura.

Coleman struck a U.S. Marshal with his vehicle while trying to flee, causing two federal agents to open fire on him, killing him. Meanwhile, Marion had her children in the car and struck a Fort Myers police officer while trying to flee, prompting that officer also to fire, striking the hood of the vehicle. Neither Marion nor her children were injured.
