Jason Gray, 31, of Dry Ridge, Ky., faces two counts of sexual battery and one count of importuning after a Clinton County grand jury handed down an indictment earlier this week, according to Blanchester police.
He is held at the Clinton County jail.
The indictment alleges that between Nov. 1 and Dec. 8, Gray had sex with the student, who is a minor, and called her to solicit sex, police said.
The student’s age was not released, but Clinton County Prosecutor Rick Moyer said she was one of the Gray’s players.
He declined to discuss the case further but did say authorities don’t suspect there are other victims.
"The vast majority of teachers and coaches don’t do anything like this," Moyer said. "The biggest thing that people need to understand is this is the exception, not the rule."
Police began investigating the incident in December after Blanchester Local Schools officials reported "criminal conduct by Gray," a police statement reads.
The probe wrapped up this month and was turned over to the Clinton County Prosecutor’s Office.
A woman who answered the phone in the central office of Blanchester Local Schools said Gray has been put on administrative leave. She did not know if it was a paid or unpaid leave.
She referred further questions to the district’s superintendent, Brian R. Ruckel.
Ruckel refused to take questions on the matter or to even say how long Gray has worked for the district and what he taught.
