A mystery unfolds Wednesday in Crawford County, Iowa after someone finds an unidentified body there late Tuesday afternoon. Now investigators are searching for clues. Reporter Samantha Suttle spent the day in Crawford County.
An anonymous source close to the investigation tells KMEG 14 and KPTH FOX 44 News the body is that of a male. However at this point, the age is unknown. And on the record, officials are saying very little, leaving locals near Dow City, Iowa, wondering what exactly happened in their small town.
"In a small town you don't expect things like that here," says Area Resident Leonard Hassett.
Folks around town are shocked to hear the news.
"On Tuesday, February 24, 2009, at approximately 4:50 p.m., an unidentified body was discovered in rural Crawford County, south of Dow City," says Crawford County Sheriff James Steinkuehler.
It was found in a 20-foot ditch along a gravel road, just a few miles south of Dow City.
"It's just kinda scary when you hear something like that big happening in a small town," says Linda Wood, an area resident.
The investigation is still in the early stages. Officials have closed off the road where the body was found continuing to collect evidence, searching for answers.
Investigators want to know, how did the person get here? Did he take his own life? Or was his life taken from him? The Crawford County sheriff says an autopsy is underway at the state medical examiner's office in Ankeny.
"If anybody out there knows of anybody missing or anything, please contact the Crawford County Sheriff's Department," says Sheriff Steinkuehler.
For now, locals continue to wonder about a crime scene so foreign to their little town.
"It doesn't make you feel comfortable. Hope it's a very rare occasion," Hassett says.
If you have any information that could help in the investigation, you can call the Crawford County sheriff's office at 712-263-2146.
I'm curious are there any missing persons from Iowa on here?
