Authorities are investigating the death of a 9-month-old boy who was found unresponsive by his foster mother at a St. Andrews-area home.
Curtis Williams of Cayce died at 9:59 a.m. Feb. 8 at Lexington Medical Center, but the cause of death remains under investigation, Richland County Corner Gary Watts said Wednesday.
The Department of Social Services took Curtis into custody Feb. 7 and placed him in a foster home after he tested positive for THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, Cayce police Lt. Jeffrey Simmons said.

The test was conducted at Lexington Medical Center after police found Curtis and his mother at 4:23 p.m. in a motel room filled with marijuana smoke, Simmons said.
Curtis’ mother, Katrina Jivers, 22, is out on bail after being charged with unlawful conduct toward a child, contributing to the delinquency of a child, and possession of marijuana, Simmons said. The charge stems from the baby’s exposure to marijuana.
Watts said marijuana did not contribute to Curtis’ death.
The boy’s foster mother found him unresponsive when she checked on him the next morning, Watts said.
Curtis had Benadryl, an antihistamine, in his system, but it is not believed to have caused his death, Watts said.
Jivers faces additional charges after police learned Friday that her 2-year-old daughter tested positive for cocaine, Simmons said. Police said they don’t know when the test was conducted or by whom.
Warrants were issued charging Jivers with unlawful conduct toward a child and contributing to the delinquency of a child, involving her daughter.
The girl remains in DSS custody at a different licensed foster home than the one where her brother stayed, DSS officials said.
DSS is investigating both cases, spokeswoman Marilyn Matheus said.
“Any child death is tragic and we’re committed to doing everything we can to find out exactly what happened and to keep the existing child safe,” she said.
The investigation began Feb. 7 when Cayce police responded to a report of an odor of marijuana coming from a room at an Airport Boulevard motel.
Someone heard a child crying inside.
Officers found Jivers and the 9-month-old in the room with a “big cloud of marijuana smoke,” Simmons said.
Two bags of marijuana and at least one marijuana cigarette were in plain view in the bathroom, according to police.
“She had a 9-month-old boy in the room getting high basically,” Simmons said. “The room was so full of smoke, the officers complained they had a headache when they left.”
Jivers was arrested and her son was taken to Lexington Medical Center.
DSS placed him in a licensed foster home in Richland County that night. He was found unresponsive at the foster home the next morning and pronounced dead at the hospiital, Watts said.
The 2-year-old girl was not at the motel Feb. 7, but was taken into protective custody in Lexington County days later, authorities said. Matheus did not have details, but said the girl was “in Jivers’ possession” at the time.
Final autopsy results on the boy could be available by the end of the week, Watts said.
