The son of a Caltech professor was convicted of first-degree murder Monday for fatally stabbing and beating his girlfriend with barbecue tongs.
George Pigman IV, was found guilty in the May 2005 slaying of Eimi Yamada, a Japanese
student who was attending school in the United States.
The 21-year-old woman's body was found shortly after 2:00 a.m. on May 7,
2005, in the 8500 block of Palma Vista Street. Police said she had been beaten and stabbed with barbecue tongs.
The same day, sheriff's deputies responded to a call reporting a nude and bloody prowler atop a home in the 6800 block of La Presa Avenue in San Gabriel. Deputies arrested Pigman who was covered in blood. Police found a driver's license and a student ID card both belonging to Pigman inside Yamada's apartment.
The Pasadena Superior Court jury deliberated for less than two full days before finding Pigman guilty. Jurors will now be asked to determine if Pigman was sane or insane at the time of the crime. That process is expected to take several weeks.
If he is found to have been sane, Pigman faces a 25-year-to-life prison term. If found to have been insane, he would be sent to a state mental hospital.
