Metro police say Deshaun J. Lewis, 21, was arrested Friday night on Joseph Avenue in East Nashville near his home. He is accused of killing Racquel Johnson, an apparent acquaintance, who was found dead inside an abandoned duplex at 1729 Herman St. Police say her body showed signs of considerable struggle, and that crime scene evidence indicated Lewis had been present. The cause of death hasn't been determined.
Johnson, who lived on Hillside Avenue in South Nashville, was reported missing Tuesday morning. Family members said they last heard from her the evening of Feb. 15, while she was working at the Opry Mills Starbucks.
Police recovered her 2001 Chevrolet Impala from a RiverGate Mall parking lot Tuesday night. In a statement released Saturday, police said Lewis was known to have had possession of the car that night.
The statement said Lewis was convicted of felony aggravated assault in June 2008 and felony vehicle theft in October 2008, each time receiving a two-year sentence. It could not be learned Saturday why he was not in custody.
Lewis is in the Metro Jail in lieu of $500,000 bail.
