NEW BEDFORD, Mass. - A convicted child rapist who was released by a judge
even though prosecutors said he was likely to strike again has been charged
with raping a 6-year-old boy at a library.

Corey Saunders, 26, was arrested outside a homeless shelter Wednesday
evening shortly after the boy was assaulted while the child's mother was
using a computer nearby.

A convicted sex offender pleaded guilty to raping a 6-year-old boy at a Massachusetts public library last year while he was on probation.

Corey Deen Saunders, 27, entered the plea to child rape and related charges. He was arrested Jan. 30, 2008, after luring the boy to the magazine stacks in the New Bedford library while the child's mother worked on a computer just a few feet away.

At a court hearing last year, prosecutors played a videotaped interview in which the boy told a child welfare official the assault was like being attacked by a "T-rex and an alligator."

At the time, Saunders was on probation after serving four years in prison for the attempted rape of a 7-year-old boy.

Saunders had been released in 2006 despite objections from prosecutors, who are allowed under state law to ask that sex offenders be locked up indefinitely after completing their prison terms. Three psychologists supported the commitment request, but the judge granted him probation, citing his lack of sexual crimes while in prison. (Stupid ass judge... since when are there 7-year-old boys in prison for him to assault?)

In April, a judge who heard the 6-year-old boy's videotaped account revoked Saunders' probation and sentenced him to the maximum five years in the earlier case. The judge ruled Saunders had violated an order not to have unsupervised contact with minors.

On Monday, Bristol County District Attorney Sam Sutter sought a life sentence because of the victim's age and Saunders' earlier conviction.

Saunders' defense attorney, Alan Zwirblis, recommended a shorter sentence, including probation. The judge did not immediately set a sentencing date but asked both sides to submit written arguments by Feb. 17.http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090203/ap_on_re_us/library_boy_assaulted

His lawyer must be smoking crack.

How about he takes his lawyer's kid to the library for some quality study time and see if anybody changes his mind.

While he's at it, maybe the judge has some young kids or grandkids needing some baby sitting by someone who didn't commit any sex crimes while in prison. Think the judge still thinks it's OK to let this guy loose?

The judge better sentence him to life this time! I swear to God. And in GP please where Bubba and all his boys can dole out the appropriate punishment!

I'm so shocked he re-offended. I thought sex offenders could be rehabilitated. :rolleyes2:

Corey Saunders will be sentenced tomorrow, April 2, 2009.

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) - The Bristol County District Attorney's office announced convicted child rapist Corey Saunders will be sentenced April 2 in New Bedford Superior Court.
On February 2, a jury found Saunders guilty of raping a 6-year-old boy at New Bedford Public Library. Bristol County District Attorney Sam Sutter recommended Saunders serve a life sentence because of the victim's age and the fact that Saunders had violated his probation from a 2000 child rape conviction.
Saunders was arrested Jan. 30, 2008 after being accused of assaulting the little boy in the children's room at the library, while the child's mother used a computer just a few feet away. Saunders, a registered sex offender, admitted to raping the boy. (http://www.wpri.com/dpp/news/local_news/local_wpri_new_bedford_corey_saunders_pleads_20090 202)
Saunder's defense attorney recommended his client receive a sentence short of life in prison including a sentence of probation. The sentencing is scheduled to take place at 2 p.m.

Library Child Rapist Gets Life Sentence.

BOSTON -- A Level 3 sex offender convicted of child rape after an attack on a 6-year-old boy in a public library was sentenced to life in prison on Thursday.

Corey Deen Saunders, 27, pleaded guilty in February to child rape, indecent assault and battery, enticing a child and threats to commit a crime.

"This is a repeat pedophile," Bristol County District Attorney Sam Sutter said.

Saunders was arrested on Jan. 30, 2008, after he lured a boy into a reading room at the New Bedford Public Library and raped him while the victim's mother worked on a computer nearby.

"He then spoke to (the victim), gained his trust, and at some point, got up from the table, went down to a secluded area of the stacks and lured that little boy down there," prosecutor MaryClare Flynn said.

At the time of the 2008 attack, Saunders was a Level 3 sex offender on probation for the attempted rape of a 7-year-old boy in 2000.

Sutter's office said it sought a life sentence for Saunders in part because of the ages of the victims in both cases.

"The judge followed our recommendation, I believe, to the precise letter," Sutter said.

"(Saunders) is a danger to children in society. Not another a child nor family should go through the pain that we have endured," the victim's mother said in a statement.

Saunders will be eligible for parole after 15 years. If granted parole, he will be on probation and have to wear a GPS monitoring device for the rest of his life.

"The message is if you do it again and get caught, you are going to go way from the rest of your life. That is the message," Sutter said.
