The Somerset County Sheriff's Department is looking for help from the public on an investigation of the shooting of a bull mastiff this week in rural Mayfield Township, north of Athens village.

Lt. Carl Gottardi said the dog was shot several times in the neck and head. The male dog, which survived the shooting, was found standing in a wood yard off Route 16, which connects Abbot Village and the Bingham-Moscow area.

"The dog had a large amount of blood on his head and neck area," Gottardi said. "We're looking for the public's help in a cruelty-to-animals investigation."

Gottardi said anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the sheriff's office at (800) 452-1933 or the anonymous tip line at 474-0230.

He said the dog, which has short hair, appeared to have been outside for several hours before Deputy Michael Ross found the animal.

"It was really cold and wet," Gottardi said. "It appeared to be four-plus years old and in good health, with the exception of what it had just been through."

The dog finally was coaxed into Ross' vehicle, with the help of the Kingsbury Township animal control officer. Gottardi said the dog ate a ham sandwich and appeared friendly and trusting, despite having been shot by someone several times.

The dog was taken to an animal clinic in Dover-Foxcroft where it underwent surgery and is expected to recover, Gottardi said.

"It takes a kind of spineless and thoughtless person to do something like this to an animal," Gottardi said. "This is a case of extreme animal cruelty, which will be investigated to the fullest extent."

Gottardi said that in tough economic times, pet owners may have trouble caring for their animals, but shooting a dog and leaving it to die in the cold is no solution.

He said there are animal shelters and adoption programs to help with pets when times get hard.

I'm just glad that police take assaults on animals seriously. It's been said a million times but I'll say it again, anyone who can hurt an innocent animal could easily hurt a human that pissed them off.

Just my luck sucks
