NAUVOO, Ill. -- Local, state and federal police are investigating a pipe bomb explosion incident here that caused a man to lose his hand.

Nauvoo police officials said 30-year-old Anthony J. Davis, who allegedly was making the pipe bomb, was taken by a private vehicle to Fort Madison Community Hospital Thursday afternoon. He later was transferred to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Police Chief Don Faulkner said Davis lost his left hand in the explosion and may have suffered additional injuries. His condition has not been disclosed.

Faulkner said they received a call at 2 p.m. about a loud explosion from an undisclosed residence in Nauvoo.

Authorities said the incident happened in a garage where Davis allegedly was making the pipe bomb. Another man, Raymond J. Percy, 23, of Macomb, Ill., was with Davis when the explosion happened.

Percy was treated for minor injuries and was released.

A search of the garage revealed two additional pipe bombs. Operatives from the Illinois Secretary of State's Police Bomb Squad removed the additional bombs from the garage, which later were detonated.

The FBI along with the Illinois State Police; the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; and sheriff's investigators from Hancock County, Ill., (Ill.) and Lee County were called to assist Nauvoo police with the investigation.

Authorities would not comment on their initial findings or whether there will be charges filed against Davis or Percy, citing an open investigation.

It remains unclear on what the pipe bombs allegedly made by Davis were intended for.
