A convicted murderer and child molester was arrested on charges that for months he sexually molested five young girls who his longtime girlfriend babysat.
Sheriff's officials say Marcus Blanchard, 54, fondled the girls, who ranged in age from 5 to 10, and had sex with a 7-year-old.
The alleged acts occurred at the home of his girlfriend, Lois Vendecreek, according to an arrest report.
The charges were not a novelty for Blanchard.
In 1980, he was arrested and later convicted of molesting his own daughters, 5 and 7 at the time.
And then in the mid-1980s he made local headlines when he killed a man in a fight over drug money, got away with it, then confessed three years later because he said his conscience was bothering him.
He was convicted in 1988 of second-degree murder and sentenced after reciting a poem about the murder, titled "That Very Day."
He was released in 1997. Four years later, sheriff's deputies found his mother, Flora Coffey, two-days dead in her suburban West Palm Beach home and him asleep in another room.
He was ultimately determined not to be responsible for her death but taken all the same to the 45th Street Mental Health Center for evaluation.
Vendecreek said she and Blanchard had been living together for nearly seven years and said she couldn't believe that he had molested the children she cared for in her home.
She claimed the accusations stemmed from a dispute Blanchard had with one of her relatives, who she accused of telling the children to invent claims of sexual abuse.
"I think he told them to say things," she said of her relative.
Vendecreek said Blanchard, an out-of-work truck driver, denied the charges and was shattered by them.
"He cried and said 'I wouldn't mind going to prison if I was guilty, but I didn't do anything'," she said.http://news-press.com/article/20090220/NEWS01/90220050
Palm Beach County Sheriff's detectives say they know of six girls that were molested so far, the youngest was five years old. They also say there could be other victims. They still have three or four more kids to interview.
They say the girlfriend was unaware that Blanchard was molesting the children, so they don't anticipate charging her. However, the County Health Department could fine her up to $500 a day for running an unlicensed family day care.http://www.cbs12.com/news/say_4714778___article.html/blanchard_day.html
