POCAHONTAS, Ark. (AP) - Police have arrested a Hoxie teenager, suspecting him of killing his girlfriend's father, and say the dead man's wife helped cover up the crime.

Nineteen-year-old Greg Anthony Smith is being held in the death of 51-year-old Ronald Dale Cathey of Pocahontas. Cathey's body was found in the Black River near Clover Bend on Jan. 24. Cathey's wife, 34-year-old Shirley Sue Cathey is being held on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder.

Prosecutor Henry Boyce says Smith was dating the Catheys' daughter, which he said angered Ronald Cathey. The girl allegedly called Smith and told him her father was threatening to kill her.

According to a warrant, Smith hid in the Cathey home overnight on Jan. 18 and later stabbed and beat Ronald Cathey to death. Police said Mrs. Cathey, the daughter, Smith and an underage boy fled in the victim's truck to Georgia, where Mrs. Cathey and Smith were arrested Jan. 24.

Evidence in Smith's truck allegedly linked him to the killing.

Formal charges are pending.

POCAHONTAS, Ark. (AP) — Police have arrested a Hoxie teenager, suspecting him of killing his girlfriend's father, and say the dead man's wife helped cover up the crime.

Greg Anthony Smith, 19, was being held in the death of Ronald Dale Cathey, 51, of Pocahontas. Cathey's body was found in the Black River near Clover Bend on Jan. 24. Cathey's wife, Shirley Sue Cathey, 34, was being held on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder.

Smith was dating the Catheys' daughter, prosecutor Henry Boyce said.

Investigators said that after learning his teenage daughter was dating an older boy, Ronald Cathey became angry. The girl allegedly called Smith and told him her father was threatening to kill her.

According to a warrant, Smith hid in the Cathey home overnight on Jan. 18 and later stabbed and beat Ronald Cathey to death. The victim's body was dumped in the Black River, near where a red pickup truck was found stuck in the mud. Material identifying Smith was found in the truck.

Police said Mrs. Cathey, the daughter, Smith and an underage boy fled in the victim's truck to Georgia, where Mrs. Cathey and Smith were arrested Jan. 24. Mrs. Cathey told police that Ronald Cathey had threatened her and her daughter five days earlier and that they hadn't seen him since.

Police say a manager at a McDonald's in Blackshear, Ga., told officers that an employee, Thomas Benham, talked about the murder. Benham is one of Shirley Cathey's sons.

According to police, officers had noticed Smith's truck at the Cathey home on Jan. 18 but Mrs. Cathey said when asked about it that Smith was not there.

Investigators said they found a blood stain in the Catheys' bedroom and hair dye in a sink. A Wal-Mart surveillance camera showed Mrs. Cathey and her daughter buying hair dye the day after Ronald Cathey died.

Smith was being held in lieu of $50,000 bond and Mrs. Cathey was being held on a $130,000 bond. Formal charges have not been filed.
