A 23-year-old Anchorage man has been charged with assault after accidentally shooting his wife while she drove him and a friend home after a night of drinking, police said. Joshua Gifford was charged with first-degree assault for recklessly causing serious physical injury to his wife, Talisha.
Police say Talisha Gifford was the designated driver for her husband and his friend, Cody Nielsen. She was driving near Tudor Road and Vance Drive at around 3:30 a.m. Friday when Joshua Gifford started handling his semi-automatic pistol and it fired.
It hit Talisha Gifford in the side, police said.
The couple's infant, who was also in the car was not injured.
"We can say it's a mistake but there are ways of avoiding those mistakes," said police Lt. Dave Parker.
Joshua Gifford was also charged with fourth-degree misconduct involving a weapon, police said.
