A Mobile woman leaped onto the hood of her car Thursday night as a thief drove off with her two young children inside, police said.
The children were quickly found unharmed, about two blocks away.
The incident occurred shortly before midnight at the BP station at 1363 Government St., according to Cpl. Charles Bagsby, a police spokesman.
The 31-year-old woman, whose name was withheld by police, was inside the BP, having left her late-model Dodge Intrepid parked out front with the engine running.
From inside, she saw an unknown man climb into the driver's side and begin to pull away, Bagsby said. She ran from the store and jumped onto the hood of the moving car, trying to force him to stop.
Instead, the man kept going east on Government Street.
The mother managed to get off without injury and call police on her cell phone. Police then found the children — ages 3 and 5 — at Ann and Government streets.
Police recovered the Intrepid on Friday, although they would not say when or where.
Bagsby said that the car was being scoured for forensic evidence.
Police were unable to give a detailed description of the man who stole the car. He was last seen wearing brown pants and a white hooded sweat shirt.
Anyone with information regarding this case is encouraged to call police at 251-208-7211.
