The Barron County District Attorney's Office has filed a child neglect charge against a Rice Lake woman who allegedly exposed her child to a drug environment at her apartment. She has since been released from custody on bond.
Melissa K. Ackerman, 28, faces a maximum penalty of 9 months in prison and $10,000 in fines if convicted on the child abuse charge. She could face identical penalties on a charge of intentionally abusing a hazardous substance, which was filed against her in the same case.
The defendant made her initial court appearance last week, and Judge James Babbitt established a $1,000 signature bond. She is due back in court March 25 for a plea hearing.
According to the criminal complaint:
Brandi Zinsmaster told an officer at the Rice Lake Police Department Feb. 8 that she had stopped at Ackerman's apartment the previous evening. Several people were present at the apartment, including Ackerman, and everyone was laughing uncontrollably. Ackerman was seen huffing from an aerosol can and all of the adults were ignoring Ackerman's child, the witness maintained. At one point the child was seen grabbing a glass that contained vodka.
Officers executed a search warrant at Ackerman's apartment in the afternoon of Feb. 8, and several people were located inside. An aerosol can of "blast away" was also found on an end table in the living room.
Ackerman allegedly admitted to authorities that she and her guests had been smoking marijuana the previous night in the living room with her child present. She also allegedly admitted to inhaling from an aerosol can to get high.
