A burglary suspect is accused of bringing his baby along on a home break-in, then leaving the child behind when authorities chased him.

Berkeley County sheriff's deputies spotted a man when they responded about 1 p.m. Friday to a report of a burglary on Oxford Drive.

The man put the child down next to a fence as deputies were narrowing in on him, said Dan Moon, sheriff's public information officer.

Authorities arrested the man and a teenager who was with him.

The teen, a 15-year-old boy who was not identified because he is a juvenile, will be charged with second-degree burglary and evading arrest, Moon said.

He said Sherwood Edward Johnson, 24, of Ladson, will face the same charges and also will be charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor, child endangerment and two counts of unlawful neglect.

The baby, believed to be about a year old, was taken to a hospital to be checked.

The child was OK and was in the care of the Department of Social Services on Friday night, Moon said.
