Daniel Taft gets 30 years in prison for killing his 9-month-old son stoned on crack & PCP
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A man said in court Friday that he was sorry for killing his 9-month-old son. A judge sentenced Daniel T. Taft to 30 years in prison.
Taft said the day he killed his son he was baby-sitting the boy and his twin brother, along with two other children. He said he smoked crack cocaine and phencyclidine (PCP) that day. When his son started crying, he lost control and started punching him.
The baby's mother took the stand in Taft's trial also. She said she was begging the court for justice, because she would never be able to smell, hold or see her baby again. The judge told Taft at the sentencing that no apology would ever bring the baby back.

A Jackson County judge on Friday sentenced Daniel T. Taft, 28, of Kansas City to 30 years in prison in the November 2007 death of his 9-month-old son. Taft pleaded guilty in December to child abuse resulting in the death of Savion T. Taft, who suffered a broken skull, broken rib, abdominal injuries and a heart laceration.
According to police, the boy’s mother said that when she returned home from work Nov. 3, 2007, Taft told her Savion was sleeping. When she tried to wake Savion, he was unresponsive.
Taft told police that when he put Savion down for a nap “everything was normal,” according to police reports.
