Three University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire students, ages 21, 19 and 18, have been cited and lectured after they floated down the Chippewa River on a slab of ice.
Fire battalion Chief Duane Grunst said the slab was about 6 feet by 15 feet. He said the three floated away early Friday morning until a campus police officer spotted them.
Fire officials retrieved the students, who were unhurt.
Grunst said the three were lectured "on how incredibly stupid this joy ride was" and that nearly 20 emergency personnel responded.
Police cited the three for disorderly conduct, which carries a $199 fine.
Authorities said the 21-year-old went onto the ice, which broke free. The other two joined him but said they weren't concerned, because they had cell phones.
