ENDICOTT, N.Y. -- An Endicott man is accused of repeatedly biting his infant son. Shawn Travis, 18, of Franklin Street in Endicott, has been charged with assault after police say he bit his one-year-old boy several times this past Saturday.

They believe Travis bit the child to get back at his girlfriend after an argument. The child was treated and released from Lourdes Hospital a short time later.

Child Protective Services has been called in, and police say Travis is no longer living in the same house with his son.

Where is this baby biting craze coming from? All I can do when my mouth is close to a baby is smooch 'em up.

Biters are a whole different breed of abusers. They usually abuse in other ways too, so the biting is often overlooked. And biting is so strange to most of us that I think a lot of required reporters, medical personnel, DCS workers, teachers, and other caregivers just don't really believe what they are seeing. Although adult bite marks are much bigger than children's, I've heard those who should know better blow them off as being from another child.

This very young 'father' needs a great deal of help before he should be allowed unsupervised time with his baby. What'cha wanna' bet he doesn't get anything but some probation...
