Indianapolis police said the shooter's girlfriend walked into the Speedway station in the 4900 block of East 56th Street during the transaction at about 10:30 p.m., pulled out a gun and demanded to know why the man was "messing with" his girlfriend.
"They started talking back and forth and about that time, the boyfriend ... comes in and basically confronts the guy that's talking to her," said Indianapolis police Lt. Jeff Duhamell. "A confrontation took place, and it all happened within a matter of seconds."
Police said the man fired three shots, striking Joseph Hoskins twice, instead of waiting for an explanation.
Hoskins was hit in the upper chest and leg. He got up and walked out of the store on his own, taking himself to a hospital.
Hoskins was listed in stable condition Monday at Community North Hospital. His injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
Police said the shooter and his girlfriend fled the scene. They released a surveillance video Monday in hopes someone will recognize them.
The gas station's policy is not to accept bills of a certain size at the time of night the incident occurred.
Investigators asked anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
